Transmission Service

Its been awhile since I've been on this forum since we haven't had any trouble with the car unitl now.
I want to change the transmission filter and fluid because the it slips and jerks in OD when the rpm are low.
What could cause the tranny to do this?
How do you change the fluid and filter on these cars.
It is a 97 GT with an auto.

To change the fuild and filter you have to drop the pan. Start by getting a few of the pan bolts out so you can have the fuild go to that side of the pan and let it leak out and drain into a pan. Keeping lowering the pan until most of the fuild is out and then drop the rest of the bolts to get the pan off. You will then see the filter right on the bottom. Remove and replace with a new one. You can get a filter and gasket at a local parts store. Make sure you clean the pan before you put it back on. Bolt it up tight and fill it with dex6 tranny fluid. Shold take anywhere from 6-8 quarts.

How high to I need to get the car up in the air to do this?
On a scale from 1 to 10 how hard is this to do?
Just to make things faster are these thing metric or imperial?

Lastly, do you think changing this stuff could fix the problem? This car has about 117,000 miles on it, I'll have to look in the service booklet to see if the PO had ever changed the fluid.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you most likely need new a new 4th gear clutch hub. This will require a tranny over haul.

But go ahead with the pan drop, I might be wrong. And IMHO it is a 3 of 10.

Thanks for the link.
How much does the filter and fluid cost on average?
If its cheap, its worth trying.

Now my fiance say she's not sure if it only does it in OD or maybe other gears too.

When I did mine on my 97 gtp its was like 15-20 for the filter and gasket I think and like 50 for the fuild. If you do it just get one of the store coupons to save like ten bucks when you spend over 50 bucks at napa or oriellys.

computters recognize a slip is its more then a certain amout of time and will through a code and its based on time of slip not what causes it

A trans dyno can monitor slips but trans would have to be out

How tight are the bolts that hold the pan in place supposed to be?
They were barely finger tight when I took them off.

Thanks, I just saw that in the write-up.
The only unordinary thing I have seen so far is three very small pebbles. I don't know how those would've gotten there.
Not a whole lot of metal on the magnet, and I've seen alot worse looking fluid before.

Here is a picture of the old vs. new ATF:

Well, I got it all put back together.
After test driving it, it still does the problem, whatever it is.
It in fact it does do this 'jumping' thing in all gears if you give it enough throttle.

When the transmission slips will there be an rpm spike?

what if the transmission (to my knowledge) is doing fine..has a 155,000 or so miles and you just want to change the filter and fluids as a precaution? is this safe? i've heard sometimes that if it has that many miles to leave it ALONE!

I think you will be safe. What I have heard is that it is a bad idea to have the tranny FLUSHED. I change the fluid on my 97 with like 142k and it did fine until 2k later the motor went.

Just do the drain and re-fill and you should be fine. Becuase if you dont do it the fuild will just get old and soon it wont do its job anymore.

YEA thats what it was i heard. i couldnt remember. the flush..why's that a bad thing i wonder?
i will try to do the transmission fluid change then.

had the same problem with tranny slipping, and a long shift-- really long shift. So drained it and re filled, fixed the problem for maybe a tank of gas, then started back up. Got angry and took the engine and trans out put in a new shift solinoid. put everything back together, car runs even better than before the problem started. the solinoid was like 20 bucks off rockaoto I think.. anyways good luck.
