Transmission Questions

Hi all. Just bought a 2004 GTP Comp G!! It's got 205,657 miles. my question is. The transmission fluid is orange and it smells burnt. It did slip alittle but it was low on transmission fluid so I added some hasn't done it since. I'm just wondering i was thinking of dropping the pan and adding new fluid till it was full again. My question is with this much miles is it worth doing? I'm just afraid I always hear if it's got high miles and shifts fine leave it alone.

With those miles, I'd leave it alone. At this point, you probably won't get any more miles out of it by dropping the pan versus leaving it.

Why not try a pan drop/filter change and install a shift kit? Could be just a clogged up filter.

Even if you only drop the pan and change the filter you're only out the 7-ish quarts of fluid + filter. As long as the fluid isn't black already it'll probably live a bit longer even with the mileage on it. I pan dropped my 00GT around 230K on a used trans and so far it's still working fine. I figured if it was already cooked then I've just got that much more out of it at this point when it does finally eat itself, lol..

I would reccommend posting a photo of the fluid. Then making your own decision based on the responses.

run it till it takes a crap, in the mean time, start saving/planning for a replacement. with those miles and the color of that fluid, it owes you nothing. its been around a long time already.

i got my car at 212,000 tranny felt pretty good, but the fluid was also black. it lost 3 rd gear for no reason @216,000 miles. went used, only got about 20,000 miles out of that one, now im 500 miles deep on a full rebuild.

so i killed two trannys so far. all with in 30,000 miles. not a fun club to be in. granted, ive had the car about 7 years now and dont pound the miles on. so its not like they failed asap on me.

That fliud color looks exactly like what I found in my old grand prix when I checked it for the first time. It did not smell burnt though. I changed the fluid several times over the following 90,000 miles. It was shifting good as new still when I traded it in.

The color could very well be due to the age of the fluid. 205k miles on 14 yr old fluid could definitely cause some funny transmission issues.

Only issue I'm having. Is when i kick it down on the highway. It will rev and then kick into gear. Does that mean. The transmission is on its way out? Sometimes when turning it does that too slips and kicks into gear
