Transmission gear selector rod question

I bought my car cheap back in 2011 because it had completely lost 4th gear and was overheating. The transmission was constantly hitting 294 degrees on the highway which kind of melted the bushing at the end of the gear selector rod (not sure what the proper name of the part is).

Fast forward, with Bill's help and guidance we put in a junk yard trans that works well and stays cool. The issue is that with the bushing at the end of the gear selector rod kind of melted, it pops off the external gear selector on the trans. I have band aid fixed it with zip ties, but with time the zip ties also break and it pops off again.

I would like to know what is involved in changing that rod with the bushing and the proper name of the part so I may order a new one. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!
 


It looks like Dorman makes replacement bushings for the shift linkage, but I've seen conflicting info on the proper part number.

If it got hot enough to melt the bushing, you might be better off getting the whole cable from a junkyard.

I have put bigger zip ties hoping they would last longer. So far so good, but the shift feel is vague with the shifter in the car. Also hoping for the good old rubbery feel it once had. :-p
 


Hey Bill, any idea what the cable is called or the P/N so I can order a new one? I tried looking in GMpartsdirect.com, but couldn't find it in the diagrams.
 
Might be worth a PM to one of the guys parting cars out right now. Especially if you don't have convenient access to a yard.
