Transmission flush?

I have an 04 Grand Prix with 192K on it. I bought it a year ago and put 35K on it since and noticed that my trans fluid is a little darker but doesn't smell burnt at all. I was thinking about doing a flush but don't know how healthy that would be on this tranny. I don't know if the last owner did a flush regularly so that makes me nervous. It doesn't slip...maybe shifts slightly hard every so often on the last gear if I'm accelerating slowly. Any info would be greatly appreciated as I'm not sure what to do. Maybe just drain, change filter and add Lucas trans fluid? Thanks

Just about everyone on this site will highly advise against a flush, especially past 100K miles with no knowledge of past maintenance. A pan drop would be the best route, but even then at much higher mileage can be risky. Others will chime in on this, I'm sure of it.

whats wrong with flushes?

When a transmission is flushed, it rids it of all the clutch material in the fluid that the transmission needs to work properly.

Many have needed to get a new trans after having a flush done.

Best thing to do is a pan drop and change the filter.

Not to derail the thread to much but is it worth it to put in a shift kit in a tranny with this kind of mileage? Im at a cross roads as well with 185k and know that a service is due... Do I invest the money in a shift kit because the way I see it, if we are gonna drop the pan and do a filter job might as well get the shift kit too righhhhtt???

oh wow i didnt know that is there a thread that explains this im curious why this happens and why it needs that material. is it just the 4t65's that do this? ive done flushes on pretty much every gm non transverse transmission and never had a problem.

If you change 80% of the fluid to fluid without that liquid clutch, how is that any different than a flush?

The main concern of a flush as far as I know would be dislodging buildup that continues on to clog other components, thus rendering the transmission useless.

Just picked up mine from shop and they told me they flushed it and didn't change the filter. Why the #uck would they do that after I told them not to flush it. And why not change the filter??!!
How long do u think till I need a trans?

how high are your miles? and was it ever serviced in the past?

that fairly low miles, if the fluid was nice and red still theres a good chance you'll be ok.

i would so give that shop a verbal lashing, and make them refund me, for not doing what i asked them to do. and putting you at risk.

most shops wont do the flush if the miles are high, or the fluid looks bad, as they know the trans can die from it. at least they should know that.

a friend worked at a lube place, they wouldn't do a flush due to miles on a guys car, he insisted they do it, they made him sign a waver in case the trans took a dump. that car left the lube shop on a tow truck. not kidding one bit. he put it in gear and had nothing, and i mean nothing.

i was standing there hanging out, hes like watch this, showed me the waver and laughed, he goes that guy will be lucky if he makes it home.....lol

Well lucky for me none of it cost me a dime. The dealership I bought it from is taking care of it.
So I shouldn't be worried? What about the filter?

I guess a better question is should I trust the digital temp reading on the DIC?
What's normal?
Mine hits 248 once in a while but is usually in the low 200's

if the trans feels good like it did before, or better, id let it go for now. do a pan drop and filter in 30,000 miles from now, seems like you'll be there in a year or so with 600 miles a day. thats a lot of driving. where the hell you going? 300 miles each way to work? thats got to suck.

200 is ok, the 250 not so much, is that in traffic? if its hot where you are, i see cali, not sure of the town, maybe put a trans cooler on. they keep the temps in check.

It's been really hot here lately. Southern Cali, I work in Palmdale. Been triple digits but I wasn't in traffic. I rarely hit traffic either way
