trans not shifting at all 4T65E-HD

Bought a 2001 Special Edition GP. Was told car runs and drives. Well it does run. And will drive but only in reverse. SO; I bought a transmission that was supposedly rebuilt but not put in a car. Had been sitting approximately 2 years, and it was dry and had no fluid in it. Took car to shop. Trans was swapped. I personally took car for test drive when they were done not the mechanic. Car ran and shifted fine. Passing gear came in without a hitch. Slowed down and sped up and all worked fine. Returned to shop. Gave them the thumbs up and parked it in the cage with all the other cars outside told shop owner I would be back in 3 days to get it. Returned, put my plate on the car. Started the car right up and waited about 5 minutes. Put the car in gear to drive off and the car would not go anywhere. Neither forward or backwards. Waited several more minutes (about another 10) but the car does not move. It won't engage in any gear including the low gears with manual shifting. Pulled the stick and oil was at proper level but pepto bismol pink. Pump is working.

Could this be a sensor problem? or am I looking at something else? I have no idea how water could have gotten into the trans with the hood down yet it looks as though the trans has water in it. Shoud lat least go into gear this way but it won't. Please help. Won't sink another dime into the car if I am going to have to build a new tranny. :th_nervous:

I don't know aweful lot about these trannys but maybe check simple stuff first. Shifting linkage on the outside come off? if you put it in neutral will the car roll? Not sure if the harness came unplugged what would happen but you could check that too.

Shifting linkage on and working properly. Not sure about any wiring harness or sensors disconnected or maybe not working. Thanks for the suggestion. I did not check to see if it rolls but if it does NOT then what, if anything, woud that mean?

well if it didn't roll it would mean the shift linkage on top of the tranny wasn't connected. But since you checked the linkage then that can be ruled out. There's really only a few things externally you can check which as stated before

1. shift linkage didn't disconnect
2. check and adjust tranny fluid issue
3. check the harness ( its on top of the tranny near the airbox to throttle body area)

after that It would be an internal matter.

Maybe you should have the line pressure tested

Very odd. I'd expect the pump might have gone, but you have reverse. If you had blown a fuse for shifting soleniods, default is 3rd gear and it would work.

Actually when I bought the car it had reverse, but no forward gears. When I had the tranny replaced with the other trans I had all gears on the day I test drove the car. The car was then parked after my test drive and it was working at that time. Now I don't have any gear - reverse or any of the forward gears.

unhook the battery for 30 minutes. see if it clears things up. and then relearns or something. free try if it does nothing.

I'll try that one tomorrow. I'm thinking some solenoid is not working because I can't imagine a trans that works perfectly right after the install and then fails to work again after sitting idle for 3 days. The fluid is a very pink color though and basically appears as though it has mixed with water.
