Trans isue on a '98 GP

Car bucks after driving around 1 hour (mostly highway). I pull over, turn the ignition off, wait 2-3 minutes, and drive away. Recently, check engine lisght is coming on. Mechanic put it on the scope, and it threw a trans torque converter error.

Anyone with similar experiences? I don't really want to shell out $2500 for a new trans (car KBBs at around $2700).

Ok, it's a PO742 TCC Stuck On. I tend to think it's #3, just becuase it does go away if I stop and start.

How much/what kind of work is involved in a solenoid replacement? Anyone have any experience in resolving this issue?

3. This problem can be a hydraulic problem. This is the most common cause of this code that I have found and stems back to a clogged TCC solenoid, not because it failed. Excessive debris in the transmission or a failing torque converter lockup clutch can cause the solenoid to have debris stuck inside and this causes a restriction in fluid flow through the solenoid. If the solenoid can not bleed off the pressure the TCC can be stuck on. If the wrong TCC solenoid is installed during an overhaul this problem can also arise as a late 4L60E solenoid is identical but does not operate the same and acts like a clogged solenoid. As mentioned in problem #1 a stuck TCC apply valve is a physical problem but causes a hydraulic problem because the fluid pressure will not properly bleed off because the valve is stuck in the wrong position instead of being able to move freely in the bore of the valve body.
 
Most times when code P0742 pops up it is from the torque converter clutch coming apart and the debris clogs the solenoid and restricts flow. You could try replacing the solenoid but the problem will likely come back as the damage is done. Something you could check first is to drop the pan and remove the filter and cut it open. If you see a lot of find debris in the pan and or inside the filter and it is dark in color or there is lots of fine metal shavings you can pretty much count on replacing the trans.
 
Ok...there were a bunch of issues...TCC solenoid, pulse solenoid controller, Torque converter...hell, they even had to replace a tranny mount!

All told, it was a bit over $1200...1/2 a new trans. I've taken it on several extended trips (over 1 hour drive time, varying speeds, etc.), and it runs as smooth as a baby's butt! Keep yer fingers crossed...
