Trans Filter O-ring

Decided to try Dex6, dropped the pan drained the fluid. Took out the filter and this time the O-ring came with it. Now the stupid new one wont go back inside. Looked at a couple videos and apparently hammering it with a socket in the end helped pushed it in. Ended up pushing the socket in the O-ring instead and now had to buy a new filter set. Only way I was able to put it on without the filter falling was putting the o-ring on top of the filter first and sort of wiggling and pushing it up. Not sure if I should try again and pushing the O-ring in first by hammering it then just snapping the filter in. Kind of afraid the way I did it this time the filter will slide off while im driving. Do you guys think it will fall off? When I put the filter on it was holding on by itself but the o-ring was not pushed in all the way. Any suggestions on how to put this pos back in the hole.

I probably didn't install my filter the correct way, but it was a very snug fit (obviously). So I took a piece of a towel and folded it up and held it under the filter. Then I took a hammer to it and it ended up fitting. I would guess that if you were able to get the pan back on, that the filter is not going to fall out as it's a pretty tight fit. But someone with more experience than I should probably weigh in as well.

Instead of using a socket, use a block of wood so that way it'll evenly distribute the force across the surface of the filter bushing.

Tap the hammer on the block of wood while the wood is pressed up against the bushing, that way you can tap it in flush and tight without denting or damaging anything. The wood is soft enough that it'll take the abuse instead of the metal parts.
