tranny shift problem

Well my old transmission died on me so I replaced it with a lightly used one. The transmission works perfectly fine except when I go to trow it into park. If I park on a level surface the transmission will not recognize that it's shifted into park and locks up. so I have to get out and just lightly push the car backwards and I hear it click. Also when I park on an incline the transmission will roll back or forward just slightly and the selector shows it is in park.

Is it possible the shift cable needs adjusted?

it's a 97 GP GT, with a 96 regal tranny.

no I have to push the button. to initiate the shift lock solenoid. When this acts up and I'm in the car when I put it in park the car with not come out of park and if I turn of the car it will not start unless I get out and push it forward or back. then I hop in and the car acts completly normal.

Disengage the cable from the ball on teh selector arm. See if you can move the selector a little more to engage it. There are a different selector arms based on model etc.

I'm not saying that I've ever run into it. But Buickman was key in figuring that out. .... Just wondering how his 5 hour power nap ended in time for him to hop into the car and happen to notice and know enough to say "Hey..uh..the dash says reverse".

I'm not telling you guys that..lol Was the first 4T60 to 4T65 swap that we had done. Riviera got a Regal trans and the selector had to be swapped.

Alrighty now I had some time to get into this problem. I let it do it's thing on a flat surface and I got out and popped the hood. I looked at the shift linkage and pushed the car into gear. (Lightbulb!) The little bracket that holds the shift cable to the top of the transmission was loose. So when the the shift cable was pushing it into gear the bracket was just loose enough it wouldn't let it push it into park.
