Tranny reinstall help!!!!!!

blortz

New member
so i am reinstalling the transmission onto my engine before dropping the engine back in the car... i am having trouble lining up the trany and the engine so the tranny will not slide together..... ive already been at it for over an hour and it only has about 2 inches to go......

advice would be greatly appreciated

HELLPPP!!!

Un bolt it from teh fly wheel and push it back if the engine and trans are out of the car there is no reason they wouldnt fall together besides that

oh so i should push the torque converter on to the tranny and then bolt the torque converter to the flywheel???? and it should go on nicely???

i just did this yesterday in my car, put the torque converter inside the tranny, dont bolt it to the engine first, then line up the splines with the engines flywheel, push it together. after that you can get under the car and spin the torque converter where the flywheel shield is supposed to go to get it to line up with the flywheel holes. i had my brother spin the crank as i put each of the 3 bolts in on the flywheel. but once you get 1 bolt in and started on the engine to tranny, tighten it down to get the tranny to close gap, i also used it to kind of pivot the engine in place. carefull not to strip threads though. after that 1 bolt is in the rest seems to be cake.

^ second that. Converter goes in trans first, then slide them together. When bellhousing is bolted, you can spin the converter through the starter hole and install the bolts on the flywheel. Piece of cake.

This will be a laugh for the guys who have done it many times. Dunno why I was working on milkcrates laced with trans fluid etc. You know how it goes.

Here's a guy...maybe me, tossing a TC in. Gives you the basics and shows you that some of them don't go perfectly easy. Part fo the trick is lifting with both hands..the milkcrate didn't make that easy. BTW you need to put about a quart or two of fluid into the converter before installing it.

That took waaay longer than it should have :th_winking:

i lol'd at this video, especially when my torque converter slid on almost like butter >.>

Sometimes they butter...sometimes they fight.

I like to have a realistic video to show the newbies what can happen. As well as how not to struggle on a milky crate.

I've had old and new go like butter and then others want to fight alittle. Think about what it is we are doing. Putting a floating item onto a fixed spline while also lining up the input shaft and pump shaft. That's rotating and lining up three things at once.

i didnt know you were suppose to put fluid in the torque converter????? i already got the engine adn tranny put back in my car.... nothing came out of the torque converter in the way of fluid?????

That's because the TC is empty. It will fill itself once you start filling the trans. but you will have to fill, then start and run through the gears, then shut off and repeat until the fluid stays full. IIRC the converter holds like 4 quarts by itself. Maybe more.

Yeah, you can probably get away w/o filling. Every mechanic/trans guy I've ever seen/talked to prefills a quart or two at the least.

I remember the first trans I tried to do without any clue what I was doing and left the tc bolted to the flywheel and then ruined the new trans trying to install it that way. I know better now and am down to about 5-6 hours from 4 days lol

yeah i didnt fill the TC but i havent put the car into gear yet
but the dipstick does say that it is up to level, that is before cycling through the gears though

... just working out a few tweeks with the new engine.... will post a video when she is all done....all new drivetrain parts, suspension, and engine :)
