tranny problem curious about what it could be

so for a few weeks now my tranny has been acting strange..i drive all around for my job so that has to take a toll on the car but anyways my tranny has been staying in 1st gear and is basically not even thinking about shifting to 2nd on certain occasions, after a few minutes it does eventually shift to 2nd. After driving it for a few more days i was feeling it pretty much not catch as they should, and this past monday it ultimately just gave up during work. The car would not go anywhere in D,3,2,1 or reverse i let the car sit on the side of the road until i had it towed. I started it up when the tow truck dropped it off and it went into gear fine and would accelerate but after it warms up it will stop working. Im really curious about why it would work when it is cold and will stop when it is warmed up. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!! thank you

My guess is the clutches are worn out and the cold fluid is allowing it to grab better. Once the fluid thins out then everything begins to slip.

Does it whine at all? Could be the pump as well. What color is the trans. fluid? Does it smell burnt/look brown or black?

The A604 in my old Chrysler did this same cold/hot routine and when I got the dealer to check the wear via scanner they were all way out of spec indicating a rebuild was necessary.

yes actually started to hear a whine and it is brown and smell burnt so i guess im going to get a call from my performance tranny shop suggesting a rebuild haha thanks for helping me out

You *might* get away with dropping the pan and changing the fluid/filter and see what you get. The filter may be clogged causing the trans. to be starved for fluid. Compared to the amount a rebuild is gonna cost it might be worth a try. Be warned that it may also just be burning money as it may not help. Your call there.

I personally would try it, but I am my own labor so I'm just out the cost of the filter and a few quarts of fluid if it doesn't work. A shop on the other hand....

If it does need a rebuild I would contact Dave at triple edge performance and see what price he can give you on one. Granted you'll have shipping costs, but his are known to be worth it. Then you just have to pay a shop to swap it in.
