Tranny help

Hello everyone. I have a 99gtp, The car runs great but the other day my tranny started slipping. Full of fluid and its not burnt. Next morning I go out and it just pulls great till it gets hot. Its showing a code but dont have a scanner, afraid to take it to be scanned. worried I woud break down or hurt the tranny farther. This just happened the other day, out of the blue started slipping.

Like to get your thoughts on what it might be or do i just go and start pulling the tranny out.Is there any tips or tricks to changing tranny and how hard it is, it looks pretty hard. The car is un modded, thanks in advance for any tips or info on the problem.

I would first go by a trans shop and get a free diagnosis (you want the code scanned). And provide us more details on what it's doing. Like Brian said, is it upon taking off, in gears, or during a shift??

It slips from stop and moving if i give it to much gas and I didnt check all the gears. I just was using drive and reverse. It slips in reverse too From a stop I didnt think it would ever get going. I was about 2 miles from my home and thought id try to limp it home. It was so bad I didnt think it would make it home. I first noticed it when i tried to pass a guy and it revved but didnt go. But when its cold it dont slip at all till it warms up a bit.

Thanks for the link, I really couldnt tell alot from what was there. I just wonder why its great while cold then it gets worse .

Thats usually a sign of a fluid pressure issue. Fluid thins out as it gets warm.

When is the last time it got a trand fluid and filter change?

I havent had the car very long and it has set awhile after I bought it. But I havent ever done i tfluid and filter. It has 165k and i have no idea if its ever been done.

Honestly, I would try that before replacing the hard parts. 2 bottles of fluid, a filter and gasket all cost $50 at autozone. I think it might help you out here, and it can't hurt anything.

Drop the pan, clean the magnet, pull the filter, then put it all back together and fill it up. I did mine a couple weeks ago in my 05 and I think it took 2-3 hours total.

Whatever you do, don't flush the fluid, it can cause more harm than good.

yeah. a pan drop (fluid and filter and lucas) helped me quite a bit with my weird problems. But if you have something internally wrong, then only a rebuild will fix it. I suggest doing a pan drop and seeing how it goes, and of course getting a free diagnosis and finding what code it's throwing you. There are some common codes that will give us a clue to such problems as a PCS (pressure control solenoid) etc

you will need 7-8 quarts of fluid, so buy 2 gallons of dex iii. and REUSE THE STOCK GASKET!!

I disagree with this, the gaskets that come with the filter work just fine.
it may work fine...but have you compared the stock gasket with the new one? stock is strong and thick, the new one is cheap thin and flemsy.

again, Bill and many others will advise you to re-use stock gasket as well. i have re-used mine 3 times now. the gasket is much more superior than the others. it doesn't make sense to use a lower quality gasket.

It had a whine/whistle when it was in gear and never went away as i sped up but it nver increased either. this started just a couple days before it started slipping

Just do a filter and fluid change with a bottle of lucas stop slip and see if it helps. Takes less than an hour and couldn't hurt anything.

Thanks for all the help guys i am going to do the filter and fluid and try the lucas as well. Thanks again for all the help.

Little late to the party. Some of the stuff you describe sounds a bit like a filter is a wise choice. The whistle/whine may be the pump starving for fluid. If that's the case it could explain the slippage. The slipping after warming up does sound like seals, maybe not though.

I do recommend reusing the stock gasket if it looks good. GM designed it to be a lifetime gasket that gets reused. The cheap rubber/cork one that comes with the filter kit will work, but it's not the same quality as the factory one with the ribs etc.
