Tranny cooler or no cooler?

Hopefully going to be switching out the 4T65E tranny in my GT for a lower mileage one soon. I was thinking about the flushing of the tranny cooler and whether a tranny cooler was even necessary. I know the theory behind the cooler is to keep the fluid cooler and cleaner, thereby keeping it going longer. But is heat really a problem with the GP? Doesn't the pcm monitor the tranny temp and throw codes when the fluid temps are getting to high?

Anyone gotten rid of the tranny cooler and if so how did you plug the tranny lines going into the tranny?

the tranny cooler really does help out. the only issue with it is that it introduces more places for leaks to occur. i would definitely keep it. however, an external one to the stock radiator would be preferred.

dont by pass the stock trans cooler, if anything add a larger cooler to the set up, cooler trans temps mean a longer life. heat is a killer.

if you were to by pass the cooler altogether, you would have to loop the trans lines of the radiator. not a good idea though.

Id be afraid of the stock cooler failing.

I plan on running an aftermarket cooler. If you still use the stock one either in series with an aftermarket then you are having the additional heat from the coolant from the engine to deal with. By running a totally remote cooler you can get the trans temps where you want them to be.

Looks like I will be going with an aftermarket unit. Any suggestions of good ones? Looking at Jegs and Summit right now, but RockAuto isn't too bad on price.

Which no one ever does.

alot of people over on gmls4.net does. the best way to do it is to pull the factory radiator/trans cooler and have it hot flushed several times. then run the the aftermarket cooler in conjunction with the factory.
