Traction control malfunction causing trans slip...

I have a 2006 grand prix gxp and about a month ago, i get in my car and start it up only to here a weird humming/ almost a bad pump kind of sound coming from the drivers side wheel well. After i got in the car when it warmed up ( this was during the -25 degree weather we had... I get a traction control disabled light pop up on my DIC and also a service stability control light as well, followed by the check engine light. Immediately, from 1st to 2nd and then on it slammed into gear and shuttered a lot. Also it is doing like a rev clunk thing if i am i the highway and let off the gas for a few seconds and then give it gas again, almost like it needs to rev up to catch a gear or something and then when it finally does it lurches forward and then hops back in gear... I am so afraid that its my trans but here's the catch.. There is usually one or two days a week omw to work that the lights dont come on when i start the car up (outside temp seems to have nothing to do with its problem) the tc light and check engine light dont come on the the car shifts like its brand new. I just dont understand how one day it could feel like its been through hell and back and another it seems as if it was brand new. The guy at my oil place said the trans fluid is really burnt smelling a dark and i looked at it and it is in fact a darker color almost brownish pink. And it definitely smells burnt. But im pretty sure that this recent problem is what is causing it to smell like this and ruin the fluid. I have seem tons of forums saying that it could be a bad piece of a harness for a speed sensor on the wheel but that just doesn't make sense to me because it all deactivates when the car hasnt even driven anywhere yet and. I also have been having an issue lately where i have to push the shifter into reverse a couple times to get the key out of the ignition. And one time i parked the car, well i thought it was anyway, got out to throw something away, and i noticed that my reverse lights were on while the car was running. So I ran back inside to make sure it was in park and was like wtf.. lol IM SO CONFUSED AND IM SCARED HELP MEEE!!

Hate to say it but you need to have someone look over the harness shift linkage etc.. Also you need to get that fluid changed asap. Not flushed but changed.

Alright, i planned on having it checked out monday. So i hear this both ways, a lot of people say its safe to flush and very recommended but then others say its a terrible idea. i do have nearly 200 thousand miles if that means anything.
 
If worse comes to worse, would it be best if i bought a new/used trans or do you not think that would solve my problems. I can get a really good deal on one right now if i jump on it fast but i need to know what the issue is first i guess. The fact that this thing drives perfectly fine when those yellow lights arent on my dash blows my mind. and then the next day, or even just coming back out of a store, the lights come on and it drives like crap. But it ONLY shifts bad when the TC disabled light is on and check engine light is on.
 
Honestly I would get these electrical demons Or else you'll have the issue possibly with a newer transmission. Flushing these trans is bad. Drop the pan change the filter and you're in business. Its also worthwile to install a transmission cooler while you're at it. Hope its something simple, best of luck
 


Nearly 200k on the trans for a GXP I'm surprised.

I know right. Its only a 4 owner but been very well taken care of. And i dont believe the trans or motor has ever been rebuilt. Thats why i really want this to be just a bad sensor or something! I know i can get many more mile out of her

DO NOT FLUSH IT! it will die on the spot if its never been serviced before.

you can flush your tranny if its been done every 50,000 miles of its life.

adding a shift kit can band aid the shifting problems sometimes. with a pan drop and new filter, maybe even a qt of lucas trans medix. and adding a external tranny cooler really helps out with the gxp. they tend to run the tranny hot. heat = death for a tranny.

next time the cel light comes on get it scanned at the parts store, its free. dont turn the car off if the light goes away when re started. or they wont pull a code.

the t/c light you'll need a real abs scanner to see whats going on. most good garages can do this, but they charge for it.

you can jack up each wheel and push and pull the tire to feel for any play, if loose the hub is bad, you can also check the wires to the hubs for damage, make sure the plugs are on all the way. check all 4 wheels.
 
Transgo shiftkit probably wouldn't hurt while your changing the fluid.

To add: shift kits on Gxp help prevent a lot of issues. These are great addons to for the Gxp to have a long life. . I wouldn't personally label them as a band aid.
 


Can anyone give me a link to a reliable cheap to install shift kit and trans cooler? I don't know what to look for as i have never done this before. I will also have them check all wires and hubs/bearing. Thanks for the input guys this really helps alot! Now i know what questions to ask when i do go.
 
all it does is make it shift faster/firmer. to do this the kit ups the trans line pressures. no tuning is needed. its easy to install. if you can bake a cake from a box, you can clearly read and follow directions. have at it lol

quicker shifts saves the clutch packs from the sloppy stock shifts. feels better too when it just sucks it into second gear and hauls.
 
now that i think of it, being your a 06 that parts store scanner just may pick up a abs code. you'll know when you get it scanned.
