top speed testing coming my way!

Soo this year the owners of the loring airforce base in northern maine will be hosting land speed racing. The airforce base was shut down in '94 i believe. The runs are 1.5mile long. This airforce base was once a secret due to it having nuclear weapons storage facilitys. there were two sightings of unidentified helicopters breaching the base perimeter in the area of the WSA just north of Loring AFB. One of the helicopters reported landed within the weapons storage area incounters around the nuclear storage areas. Also this base was the closest Air Force base on the east coast to Europe. It was originally built with a capacity of 100 B-36 Peacemaker bombers.

Sorry about all of the off topic info just thought it was interesting. But anyways I'm defently going to go this summer and see when i can do.

Do you guys who live in michigan go to the former Airforce base in Oscoda race there or is it only car and driver that can test there?

i dont know that i would push the car much faster than a 120 if it were me. going that fast puts a ton of load on the engine to keep accelerating and you can actually start to knock a bunch. i hope your tune is good for this.

I have done 145 plenty of times and i had my ls1m hooked up while i was doing it, i got 1 or 2 at the most for just a second.

Are you serious? 120! :D

knocks too? damn im learning more and more

most people dont get a chance to get the car tuned in the upper RPMs of 3rd and 4th because they never get going that fast. the car leans out with more load the faster you go. i also dont see a whole lot of reason to be going almost 150 in a grand prix. i would lose a race because someone would keep going and i would let off. ive never even gone off my speedometer, which is 115. i just see no point.

I sleep with enough nukes to put a hole in the earth the size of alaska only a couple miles away. :D

Good stuff on the top speed testing. I love it when they use old runways for that sort of thing.

Haha that must of made you sleep nice and tight at night ;-)

Well the drag strip that i go to is an old air strip, but it's only an 1/8 mile, but its still fun as hell.

i will say, the last time i was toping my car out, around 130. i did it a few times on that stretch. the first time i did it i held it for a little while because i wanted to see if it would pick up anymore, i then slowed down and did it again going down a slight hill, got up to about 125 then it starting slowing down pretty good. im sure it was knocking like hell. if i do go at it again (probably wont tell i can atleast see if im knocking) im not going to stay at the speed or try and contuie to go faster. im sure it does goes lean as hell and knock a good bit. also oil becomes very videl then. with the crank spining like that and sliging oil everywhere, im sure things are not getting oiled like they need to be.

meh... I think the motor spinning in first gear at 6k rpms is the same as it in 4th gear at 6k rpms. Only difference is the transaxle/transmission is in a different gear. Just my 2 cents. Ive been up to 140-145 in my Bird and it wasnt bad at all. Was racing a friend of mine from a roll and sure the hell didnt need to be going that fast, usually I shut down around 120 ish on rolls and 110 or so from digs.

how long does it take to get to 6k in first, how long would it take to get to 6k in 4th??? oil being slung all around the motor for that long of a time and not properly oiling could be disasterious.

its not really the rpm that matters. its the amout of time it takes for the crank to start a whirlwind with the oil.

I never really push my GT that hard... but the first run I got on the autobahn in the ol M5 ran me just up to about 202.. or so... After I looked down at the s/o I nearly s**t myself... it really never felt like I was going that fast just staring out ahead... and being an American, and not used to that speed, kinda makes ya wonder... (what if I get wheel jump...) or something of the sort... and really puckers your A**hole... but it was a great experience I will never do again... like carrier take-offs.... heh.:th_peaceout:
