to rebuild or not to rebuild

Ok so here is my situation, keep in mind this car is for my son so his budget is low. Bought 98 grand prix 3800 SC with 128,000 mile for 400 bucks. They said the engine knocked so I'm thinking rod bearing. The original plan was to take the 3800 SC out of his 92 park ave that the frame rusted through on. found out series one and two won't swap out. The problem with the original motor is bad oil pump valvetrain making niose. I know the pump doesn't pump changed oil and filter when pulling motor drained oil just as clean as when I put it in there and no oil in the filter. So i'm thinking check the main and rod bearings while the engine is out if clearance are ok bolt back up,if not have the crank turned and new bearing. Next worry cam bearing if cam ok then do cam bearing, how hard are these to replace? If I do cam and mains where is a good place to get parts at a good price have you guys found a web site that offers good deals? If I just do an entire rebuild about how much does the master rebuild kit cost.

Thanks for the help.

if youre looking at an oil pump failure, forget the bottom end. 3800s are plentiful and you can get a new bottom end for much cheaper than it would cost to machine and get oversized parts.
