to mod or not to mod

i have a 1999 grand prix gtp coupe has minor rust but i was wondering if i should lightly mod it or not? the engine has 219k on it how much of a factor would that be? it's throwing a couple codes on the odbII scanner.

What codes are being thrown? Obviously you want to do all maintenance before you start modding.

Make sure the engine is up to par before you start throwing stuff at it that is going to make it work harder.

throw on a 3.0
blow the motor
make an epic rebuild that makes no sense
blow it up on the dyno
don't say anything
???
profit

^^^ i hit 250k before i most likely cracked the flex plate
before i gave up and bought a brand new car

i was thinking a fenderwell intake, 180 degree t stat, 3.4 pulley, autolite 104 plugs, headers, and a pcm. the previous owner said it had a borla exhaust installed on it but i don't really believe that. as for the codes it is throwing they are P0401 and P0442

3.4 might be pushing it

with that many miles i'd really suggest 3.6 unless you add rockers and an aeroforce to scan

With those kind miles I would look around and get a lower mileage block and then starting modding that one and then drop it in. Minimum downtown and no rush to finish it. If I could do it all over again of would of done that instead of modding my current one and having so much downtown and avoiding the PIA.

Seriously, your car must have been a POS to begin, was not taken care of, or you weren't installing modifications correctly. Case in point there are more people with high mileage cars than low mileage cars on this site that mod with no problems and don't have that downtime you are talking about.

OP get the codes resolved then start modding and enjoying the car. I've got over 200K on mine with a healthy dose of mods and she's still running strong.

Resolve codes... Then basic maintenance items, lim, tranny, etc. then headers, tune, then mod away!

:)

But first and foremost so you aren't all over the place spending unwisely, then spending again... Research what you want from the mods or how far you wanna go or spend, make a plan and then go for it!

Good luck!

Not at all ask anyone who has seen it. Let me elaborate I've done headers, cam, lim, heads etc all at different times. If I could do it all over again I've would have done it all at once to avoid having to take everything apart multiple times in my driveway. Working 50 hours a week and being in school as well as having custody of a 1 year old neice. Time wasn't on my side to say the least. Everything has been installed correctly I do my research before I buy or attempt anything and take my time to ensure user error is avoided. That being said if I was able to get another motor from the junkyard etc I would of just built the motor and dropped it all in and called it a day. Thanks for assuming.

Yeah, I would get the codes sorted out, do basic maintenance like plugs wires, fluids if necessary and then have at it for modding, mileage on these blocks is just a number really. I took mine apart at 190k to port the heads and lim while doing LIM gaskets and sure enough I still had the crosshatching on the cylinder walls and all of the valves still rubbed dye off when checking for proper seating. No reason this shouldn't keep running 12's until the body rots out or I decide to inter-cool it and make it run 11's.

Look at DSluts he has 200k plus modded rust and all and it still doesn't want to die lol. Yes address the maintenance items first and of course the codes and modify it lightly and go from there.

Come on guys... be realistic.

Big ass snail.... piping/manifolds..... 23lbs of boost.

Blow engine, and rape the transmission.

Start all over on a different platform.

Profit.
