To flush or not to flush!

I read where they say you should have your tanny flushed at 50K miles...well mine will be hitting that mark soon!!! I have heard from some people that if its not broke don't fix it..as in DONT DO IT! Until I feel as if it truly needs it! So what would you guys suggest to do? Also I was told that I wont need to change my filter until around 100K and that some of the newer cars don't have a "filter" more like a screen and it gets flushed when they flush the tranny.
 


Yup get it done. Regardless of the spec of 100k or whatever they want to tell you so you need a rebuild soon, just like an engine, if you change the oil regularly it will last alot longer. Transmissions are no different, but if you wait too long there is no point in changing it as you have already cooked the internals. I say 30k because thats the normal intervals for severe duty and by "severe" is meant anything like city driving. Normal interval would be like a constant highway driving, all the time.

I would flush it. Since the fluid is still pretty new. I would change the filter put in a few qts of fluid in then flush it.

See thats what I keep hearing from people around here. Whats the difference between just draining the fluid and replacing it..as to "flushing".I have been trying to google around and I can't really find the answer.
 
I changed the fluid three times for various reasons in the Impala. It was only at 77k when I sold it and the transmission ran like a champ. Perfect crisp shifts for a six year old tranny.
 
If you've owned the car since low miles, you can change it every 50 or 30k miles but if its on a car with more miles, 100k plus and it's never been done, don't do it. I did that on mine not by choice and my transmission started jerking, luckily it recovered. :D
 


Yes do it!

There is the old wifes tale that says if you have never done it to a transmission in its life, do not ever do it! The theory is, once you drain the fluid it takes metal and material out that once helped the trans run and shift properly. You replace the fluid and all this magic stuff is now gone, the trans will fail shortly after.

IF the transmission is in good working condition, i.e. the fluid is not burnt and it is shiftiing properly, :burnrubber0: you should do it. The fluid is not designed to last forever.
 
When a flush is done, the trans lines are hooked to a machine that puts new in and contains the old fluid. Frequently the filter is not changed during this process because that would mean dropping the pan and replacing the fluid that was just put in.

Dropping the pan (or called trans service) is dropping the pan. In the 13 quart system about 7 drain out with a pan drop. The filter is replaced and the pan back on, then refilled.

The myth behind flushes being bad is from folks that didn't touch the trans fluid until the car exhibited a problem. Then they get a flush and the problem doesn't get better.

I prefer the pan drop because it requires no special tools, can be done reasonably low cost by the average joe and a clean filter is put in place. Filters are important.

On the interval, 30K miles or less. I service once a year. Keeps the internals nice and clean. Your recommended oil change interval is high as well and if you change your oil at the recommended interval, your internals of your motor will be filthy and sludged.
 
Lots of stuff has been said But this came out of a gm master tech with 35 years in the field

Specs say 50k flush and 100k filter/flush
he says 25k flush 5ok filter/flush

He also has 5 gm cars all with over 250000 miles and hasnt lost a tranny yet since heat and contaminants are the killers
also depends how you drive under extreme driving he says the intervals should be shorter

Im incline to trust the guy considering trans is his specialty and he has just about every gm and ase cert you can have
