Ticking at start up

I have had my 02 gtp since april of 08 and have had no problems but just about a week or so ago it started to tick. It was weird it would be really loud but then go away as you drove it and run perfectly smooth until you let it sit over night, it has to sit over night though. It could be 8 or 9 hours without driving it and start it up and it would run fine. Let it sit overnight and start it up in the morning and it ticks. What might it be and what might fix the prblem?

Thanks for any info and help

Lifter tick. It happens. Get a product called Lucas Oil Stabilizer. If it goes away then it is a lifter.

does it go away pretty quick? if so, dont worry about it they are still pumping up, just not holding over night

I had the same problem in my 03 gtp, I had run mobil 1 since I had the car , One morning out of the blue in started ticking, but would not go away. So I ended up taking it into the shop. Turned out the motor had a build up of sludge in the bottom end and would not let the oil travel to one of the back lifters until the oil warmed up and was able to travel through. he used a cleaner/conditioner and about 4 oil changes. this helped for about 1 month until it did it again? Without dropping the pan I just ran a cleaner again and it stopped.

Well at first it would take a while to go away but, i started driving it to see if it would go away it did help by driving it (the tick wouldnt last as long) but it never went away. I have tried seafoam and the local mechanic gave me some other stuff that helped a little but it still has not completely gone away. So try the lucas oil stabilizer or just do the lifters or do you think it will just go away?

Be forewarned: This is coming straight out of my ass.

Check the torque on your exhaust manifold bolts. Loose EM, or a leaky gasket, sounds just like a crapping lifter, then the sound goes away after the metal heats and expands....

I have this exact problem, one of my manifolds is leaking ever so slightly and as it warms up, seals itself and the tick goes away

Lucas actually makes a lifter cleaner that works very well on the infamous 3800 lifter tick. There are several guys in Idaho that replaced their lifters only to have it come back a year later. I haven't had it since I got in the habbit of using the lifter detergent.

How often do you use this lucas cleaner before the tick comes back? I'm only getting about 2000kms before it starts again. This tick drives me crazy thats for sure.

They tell you to use a measuring cup full of it every oil change or something like that...I just kinda wing it and use it until the sound goes away...the GF's 2.2 Ecotec in her Cavalier likes to tick...I hate those little DOHC motors...so noisy...the Lucas quites it down for sure.

man, now that I hear this I'm wondering if my tick is from my exhaust or lifters. I'm pretty sure its the back manifold to down pipe connection but damn this has me wondering now lol. I'm going to add that lucas additive with my next oil change. Also what conditioner do you guys use? I've use seafoam and it worked amazingly for my truck.
