Throttle Body Screen Removal

I know I know.. this has been discussed before :)

I have seen some guys say they have issues, and some say that the car runs just fine. I have also seen that 97 and 98 cars may have issues where as later years do not due to a different MAF/screen setup in the throttle body.

Just looking at ZZPs flow results from removing the screen, they gained 11.2% flow on an L67 TB. Seems pretty good and worth it if the fuel trims don't get thrown out of wack (which I could monitor I guess with the wideband).

If you are really against it, I am definitely willing to listen. But would love some experience or supporting evidence why I'll have issues on my 99 GTP.

I've never looked closely because I personally wouldn't take mine out, but is it replaceable after it's been removed? If so I'd just try it out, if not then maybe wait for a good deal (or go to a junkyard) and buy a spare to test it out on.

I would have to say that I'm against it. The function of the screen is to make the air coming into the intake laminar or "smooth and even" just before the MAF sensor to ensure the sensor gets an accurate reading at any engine RPM (and intake air velocity). A relatively smooth and straight intake would help achieve a similar effect, but it's very difficult to make an intake that can itself provide a laminar flow of air at all intake velocities. Any bump or ridge will create turbulence that will increase or decrease depending on those velocities, so even if the MAF sensor is relatively accurate at idle (giving the impression that removing the screen has done no harm), it may become inaccurate as you accelerate and go into WOT, which in turn won't allow the PCM to determine the correct amount of fuel to inject.

Sorry for the long-winded explanation :P Really though, just because I wouldn't doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't, I'd just personally make sure I had a way to "go back" if I didn't like the results. Scan for KR if you decide to, and maybe even monitor the MAF signal as you drive around. It will let you see if it's causing any problems not having the screen in place.
 
I agree. I wouldn't remove it. I did a lot of reading about it on ls1 tech due to the MAF I'm about to switch to. I'd prefer to have the honey comb in there. In the near future I'm going to put a different style of honeycomb in....but it is needed. Especially at higher RPMs.

Appreciate all the info guys. I don't plan on taking mine out... yet haha.. maybe someone will see this thread who has taken it out and monitored AFRs up through WOT and can comment as well.

Another thought is if the straightening effects are needed, I wonder if there is another way to do it that is less restrictive than the screen and still achieves the same result. (like 4 straightening walls or something right in the center of the flowpath, instead of all of the little "cross-hars" throughout the entire flowpath with the screen).
 
My question....what kinda mods are u doing, done, or planning to do where the screen would become a restriction

^^ What he said... The amount of restriction is work the laminar flow... ill just turn my boost up a click to overcome the "restriction"
 


I am with Nik it smooths out the air flow forcing turbulent air in causes havoc. Think about take a sip of water from a garden hose from the side like normal, them try pointing it directly in you wide open mouth. I tries taking it out car ran like crap and mpg suffered, so I put it back
 
It's the lower rpms---idle light cruise, startup areas are the reason for the screen. There are more efficient screens out there to use that have deeper but more open cells. High Rpm operation however on 99% of maf's are where they thrive. Turbo apps though do better on speed density with no screen

Leave it be. You will see little to zero change. I did it once and it was fine for a year and then I get a weird idle miss / shake. Put the screen back in and everything was fine again.
