thermostats

has anybody tried using a 205 degree thermostat in an 04 gp with the series 3 3800 ? It seems like the 195 never gets to proper temp.

where should the needle on the gauge be for 195 degree. I have tried 2 new stant superstats so far

The grand prixs from 97-08 all use the same thermostat, NA, Supercharged, 5.3L GXPs, all use the same 195* thermostat. Figuring when it opens it will still run a little hotter, most will probably run about 200-210* depending on the car and outside temps and driving conditions. GM# 24505924 - Retail $18.20 from a dealership, may be more or less being in Canada.

For my car idle in a Texas/Ok summer in traffic on a 105*+ day the temp would see around 220* with the factory thermostat. This is why I dropped to a 180*. That being said, Winnipeg, CA would be much colder most of the year so you may be fine with just a factory 195* thermo, but I do NOT believe they make a compatible hotter one. She is just gonna run cool up there.

Replace the thermostat, flush the coolant and replace and see if she runs warmer sooner, you may just have to allow more time to warm up to operating temps.

it used to run right in the middle for the first few years but after I changed the original stat i could never get it back up there , even with an oem replacement

Think it ought to ride just above the quarter mark. Honestly, I can't imagine what would make the engine too cold, except a thermostat being stuck open.

From experience and using Torque, these are all approximate starting at the quarter mark, nor is the movement in equal increments. The cold line is 140. For those of us up north, i generally do not turn on the heat until the gauge reaches this mark. It allows the engine to warm a little quicker and get better heat out of it.
Quarter Mark- 179
185
194
203
Half Mark- 210
221
230-Highest Ive been, My water pump failed and I shut the car off at this point

My car has a 180 stat (from previous owner, i might change back to 195) and when cruising i get to about 186-192, between the first and second line past the quarter mark.

It freaked me out when i first got the car and saw the needle go past the middle line when i was idling. Then I thought back to the cars my parents owned. the 94 Olds 88 went to 220, middle mark was 200 on that car. The 01 Buick Century also went one line past center at idle. All that time I thought there was something wrong with the olds because it went past the 200 line,

Thanks for all the input, I guess it is where it should be and I'm just too fussy. I put in another stant superstat and now it's just take what you get .
