thermostat temp sensor and interior air temp sensor failure?

How often should the coolant temp sensor be replaced? It is the sensor under the t-stat. Does it fail ever? And what exactly does a air temp sensor do? Thanks

Lew.. Can you please fill us in on what year and model of car you are asking about.

It's not super common for the ECt to fail, but it's a sensor and it can fail. There's no expected change interval. There's also no interval where you should automatically replace it.

Air temp sensor.. well..it's in the intake. When you give us more info, we can tell you exactly where to find it.

It is a 06 grand prix gt. I do know where it is under the t-stat, just not how often to change it or if it goes bad. Just trying to figure out this no heat issue and motor temp issue. Thanks

Well, you shouldn't need to replace the ECT...unless it's giving the dash or PCM bad info about the temp.

The IAT merely tells the pcm what temp the air coming into the motor is, that's about it.

Does your car have automatic climate control? If so there is an air temp sensor in from on the A/C condensor that reads outside temp and if it thinks it is hot out, no heat in auto mode.
