05 grand prix, i bought it from 05compg because my cd player didnt work. got new one installed and its locked.. google tells me it has to be done by dealer with a tech-2 scanner. pressing the 2 and 3 preset button thing doesnt work. does anyone know how to do it without messing with dealer?

Nope, 04+ all require a tech 2. If you can find a friendly dealer, I've heard some do it for free. Mine quoted me something like $68 or whatever their hourly rate is. Its less than a 5 minute job.

What was wrong with the origional? just not reading cd's?
If your comfortable with it you can sometimes get away with swapping the cd mechanisms which leaves you use your origional radio and not haveing to getit unlocked :)

I hear everyone say it's just a 5 minute job. When I had to have mine replaced, it took my dealer just under an hour to do. And they charged me $100. :(

my dealer quoted me 70 bucks.. and michael, i thought about that today at work. im pretty mechanically inclined and it prob wouldnt be that hard. the old one has lights burn out and wont even accept a CD.. wonder if i could swap the "brain" out of my radio into the new one.. hmmmm

Yup you can also swap the front panel over as well, Before you takeoff the front you have to make sure you disconnect the panel cables from the main board on the inside or else they will get ripped due to the small lenthg.

I think it's the bottom cover you open and youll see where they connect to the main board, Very easy to do.

If you can get the right socket for the screws holding it together it wont take very long either, usually less time then it takes to drive to the dealer :)
