The quietest exhaust...

Hello everyone,

I will be straight forward, I don't really like the way my 01 Grand Prix GTP sounds. They wanted to make a V6 sound like a V8 but it only really sounds good idling. Do these mufflers just get louder with time? They all seem to sound like this. Even my '94 sounded like this.

Anyways, I'm going to replace the mufflers. I'd like it to be quiet and smooth. What difference does a resonator make, if any?

Any suggestions?

A resonator is really just another muffler. The best for sound quality and quiet is the stock mufflers. I've got no res or cat and you really can't hear the exhaust even in the cabin.

I have a high flow cat, no resonator and stock mufflers. It does drone quite a bit in the cabin but it sounds really bad outside. I didn't notice until I let a buddy borrow my car one day. When he pulled away I was mortified at the sound lol. I'm hoping a glasspack will quiet it down a bit.

i put a 31 inch gpack on and a magnaflow super turbo muffler and i have no idea what the other one is. it was pretty new when i bought the car so i left it there. but my car is pretty quiet.

put a single muffler cat back on it with a 32 inch glass pack for a res, i got headers and a hi flow cat. you cant tell i have headers. nice and quiet.

regals dont get the dual exhaust.

truth is the stock set up is as quiet as your gonna get. maybe yours are rotting out?

The previous owner of my car had the exhaust re-done. I've heard stock setups, and my aftermarket setup is definitely quieter. They're just direct fit parts, probably cheap stuff. I know stock isn't as quiet as it could be.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I don't usually join car forums but I really like this car and I have no one to talk to about it. No car friends...

I don't have a resonator on it. I like the idea of putting a glasspack muffler where it used to be. The mufflers could very well be going bad, but they look fine from the outside. If you guys say it's quiet when stock then I'll have to replace them.

If the mufflers don't have any bad rust or holes at all, they're fine. No resonator on stock mufflers is definitely louder than I'd like on my car. Do what Scotty did, a big Glasspack in place of it is the best option.

In place of where the resonator would go.

About the size of glasspack, match is up to the same size you currently have. The common length are 30" and 32".
