• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

The IncREDi-hoopdy Official 5-Speed Build

Bring the motor here and we'll first try it on my car and then redo it all on the l67 block if that doesn't work.

Heads are stock surface, used XP cam with less than 200 miles in mint condition, stock original pushrods, stock original lifters. The only things different are the HS 1.6 roller rockers, 105 lb Crow Cam springs, new valve seals, JP single roller timing chain and cam. Due to the fact that I'm running a Bonneville coil bracket, I need to remove the supercharger and intercooler to remove the front engine mount or I'd be elbow deep in engine right now. I just don't have time for a top end teardown.

The bracket needs to come off to get the front cover off?

I know the rear cover sucks no matter what, wait, 97, you should be able to pop that off no problem.

I hate to suggest it, but stock rockers would probably make more power.

Honestly man, I wasn't necessarily after power. I was after very specified lift numbers. If I were doing this for power, there would be a snail living under my hood. The Bonneville coil bracket requires the use of the NA front engine bracket...that bracket wraps over the top of the valve cover. I'll probably put the stock rockers on and see what happens when the time comes, but it seems more like a lifter issue to me.

Interested in selling the 5spd swap?
Nice build BTW. Sucks to see you're having issues with it.

The swap is going nowhere, although I do admire your bravery in asking. I've got way too much time invested to back down now. When/if the time comes and I get rid of it, the only way it will leave will be as a complete car because I'm definitely not taking all that crap back out.

Obviously has not even the slightest idea of how much research, time, money, and work goes into a 284 swap. Honestly, when my Impala rots out, I'll probably swap the drivetrain into another and keep rocking it. How could you put a price on a year of someone's life?

Absolutely awesome thread and build! I read through this without stopping, eagerly turning pages so to say... I wish you luck and success in your work and would be lying if I didn't say I wish it were all done so we could all see and drool over it. Lol

:)

I've just read too many times of people having to have harland sharp rockers rebuilt after very short periods of time.

Reliability is a factor right?

Otherwise a much more "aggressive" cam would have been in order haha.

My HS rockers just came back from being checked out. They were one of the last sets produced with all the updates already done. The only thing they did was replace 4 of the big rollers due to measuring .002" under the others which the guy said was more than likely an installation error than wear. So they should be fine.

I chose the cam because I don't want to rev to the moon. I've driven/ridden in a car with three different camshaft configurations: XP, IS3, and VS. The XP was one of my favorites because of the way the power was geared, followed by the VS for its broad torque curve. The IS3 just seemed like you had to work too hard to keep it in its "happy zone" although the idle was to die for.

The reliability I believe will be more based on my driving habits. This car is typically driven like it's owned by a 94 year old woman...very light throttle and rarely sees boost. Every now and then, I got on it, but that was few and far between. 11k ago, I did the top swap, and upon disassembly, the cylinders still had the original cross hatching. It's very well maintained and rarely driven hard. I feel it will last quite awhile once running.

Also, for being a "Stage 3" clutch, a 6 year old would have no problem depressing the pedal. I checked out clutch engagement while I had it running Thursday night. The Getrag 284 clutch is a PITA to bleed and I was worried about it after the clutch master cylinder blew a seal...thankfully the new master cylinder came pre-filled and bled and there are locking check valves if you open the system to block out any air. It's actually an ingenious idea...just a tad bit difficult when you're on your own.

Jason... if you aren't held up by body work etc and are ready to bring it back and the only issue is top end. Hook it up to the Jeep if you can. Drop it off here. That way it's only a little over an hour away from you and that should make it much easier to pop down and tear into it.

Plus.. the Swiggles Used 3800 Parts is much more local. Surely he has 5 sets of everything possible laying on his shelf.

Rust repair is being taken care of right now. The D/S is completely finished...which doesn't surprise me...there was a lot less rust there. The P/S is going to be a pain I'm sure. But, my dad is the man and will have it all taken care of. :)

I figure I'll order up some LS7 lifters and some reusable rocker bolts and get it done. I can hang out here and do random things until the parts arrive then go back out. This time however, I won't leave until it's right.
