The FWD Cobra: Just one more thing then the MG gets all the attention

Re: The FWD Cobra

I'm going to stick with the 3.8" pulley for now with 1.84 YT rockers + current mods. I'm going to grab a set of heads from the JY this weekend hopefully and I might do a little bit of work to those.

I thought that I had to use my oil pan?

Re: The FWD Cobra

you can use the series3 pan if you do some minor grinding. overall it isnt really an 'upgrade', so to say.

Re: The FWD Cobra

I see, I wouldn't ever think of an oil pan as an "upgrade". This just means that I don't have to swap them around.

And where do I need to grind? I'd rather do it outside the car and the search isn't really showing much.

XD, nice.

Sandman, I just cleaned up my L67 pan, and found a new windage tray/gasket. I'll pull the L26's pan either tomorrow, or the 10th, and set them side by side, and try and get an idea where it needs to be hit.

Re: The FWD Cobra

That would be awesome dude.

Got to love the for sale forum. Besides the rockers for a good price I knabbed those L32 heads for cheap.

Re: The FWD Cobra

Not sure if it's been asked but do you have any info on the Koni setup? I didn't know you could get Koni suspension parts for these cars.

Re: The FWD Cobra

I bought them second hand but they're retrofitted struts. The stock housing is gutted and a Koni strut is inserted into it, so boom, Koni struts that fit W-bodies. There are only Koni struts you used to be able to buy through GMPP but they've been discontinued, you'll see them pop up every once in a while in the for sale section.

I don't know exactly what Koni strut is used, they're something like these I believe:

Koni 86101436RACE - Koni 8610 Single Adjustable Race Strut Inserts - Overview - SummitRacing.com

Those are an example of what goes into the stock housing so those probably the right ones but you get the idea. I'm sure there's a part number floating around somewhere if you do some searching.

Re: The FWD Cobra

L67 on the left, L26 on the right. Top down, they are pretty close in size. Only huge difference is the Oil drain plug location, and the front 'lip'

After looking at them, and trying to see where there was enough difference to matter, there was only 1 spot that stood out. It's highlighted in yellow.

As you can see, there are some spots on the sides on the L26's pan that stick out a little more, but they shouldnt cause any issues, since they are hanging below everything. Though that front 'lip' area does stick out quite a bit..

Re: The FWD Cobra

Not really any. But you cant use the L67 windage tray/gasket without modifying it to clear the oil-pick up. The L26 has a built in (so to say) windage tray in the oil pan, and doesnt use any gasket, just rtv to seal it to the block.

(Since we're both building L26's no need to change out pans, just grind a few spots on the L26's oil pan, and it'll squeeze in our cars.

Also, the l26's is MUCH thicker and heavier. If I dropped it, I wouldnt be afraid of it denting..whereas the L67s is a very thin pan, that does dent easily.

Re: The FWD Cobra

IDK if the pan sits low enough in the car to really improve the center of gravity or not. But yeah, I can imagine the pan has got to be considerably heavier.
Wonder why GM used a cast pan at all instead of the time-tested/cheaper/lighter steel pan...

The pan being cast aluminum I bet it wouldn't hold up to some hits all to well. Aluminum is a much different material than steel, steel will be much more forgiving receiving hits. I've got some good dents in mine and the floorboard from something I hit.

Re: The FWD Cobra

Yeah, aluminum will take a lot of abuse, but a hard tap in the right place (like hitting something driving down the road) will shatter cast every time.

Re: The FWD Cobra

My heads came in today, looks like it's almost motor swap time. I'm debating whether or not I should do a little bit of work to these.

Re: The FWD Cobra

Im playing with mine a little. Got my air dremel, with some carbide bits, and am just removing the casting flash. Just search on here, and you'll find all sorts of stuff about home "porting" these heads....Tho I did practice some on the old L26 heads to get a feel for it, before I started on the L67 heads.
