The Big Bad Brake Thread

It appears as though all of the hardware comes with this caliper and bracket from Napa? Would you agree or disagree by looking at the pic (click on it for a bigger pic) and reading the description I copied and pasted here? It comes with the caliper bolts and quite possibly the spacers??? I don't know, what do you guys think?

Here's the caliper link again: http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx?R=SEBSE5243A_0248561028

still need caliper bracket bolts, these bolts are the ones that bolt the brakes onto the knuckle. they maybe a dealer only part, or find them at a junk yard.

still need brakes lines, and banjo bolts for the brake lines.

rotors and pads as well.

Talk to me about the ss brake lines. Do I look for a set for the 2000 camaro (this is the vehicle I have been sourcing so far) or for my 2005 GP? I'm thinking the GP? Just not sure if the GP lines would thread into the F-Body calipers???

Also, if anyone has some good links for some ss lines, banjo bolts, and caliper mounting bolts, if you could please post up, that would be great.

Thanks for everyone's help and input to date!

Mike

you want ss lines for the f body calipers, they bolt right up to the factory lines on the car.

they are a bit longer and need the mounting tab bent a bit on the cars frame, and make sure the lines are mounted on the caliper so they dont hit the tire when turning.

it took a few trys to get them right on my car. they kept rubbing when turning tight. i just had to play with them a bit.

Thanks scottydoggs!

I just randomly used a 2000 Camaro as my source vehicle. Is there a better vehicle to use where the parts are just as plentiful but cheaper or are they all the same?

dont know about price. the 98-02 camaro lines are what everyone seems to use tho. its what came with my set.

i got a used set off a member, came with everything, calipers, 4 slotted rotors, pads, all bolts, and all 4 SS lines.

I'm going to ask this question yet again.

because i feel as if it isn't addressed as much as it should be..

I honestly think i'm going to have to replace all the brakelines under the car.
because they're mostly all rusted to high hell and i've already had a line pop on me..
i know there is air in my lines somewhere, but i'm afraid if i bleed and repressurize the system, it'll put more strain on the bad lines and cause them to go.

and put me into a tree or into outerspace.

Now.
my master cylinder is still in good shape, and the lines coming from the car to the calipers are all fairly new, as well as my pads up front. the rear pads (and possibly rotors could be changed out. but meh.)

i seriously need to do something about this gawd awful pedal feel. i depress the brake pedal all the way till its even with the gas pedal before my brakes are even stopping; BUT if i floor the pedal, your face is kissing the windshield.

Honestly.
how big of a total bill would i be looking at if i bought all new OEM brake lines from a dealership?

or would i be better off making my own from like autozone or something???

i could really use some advice guys...
i'm at my wits end with this.

SS lines...

The ZZP ss line kit (4 lines - longer style) and their caliper kit (including banjo bolts and caliper brkt bolts) = $165
AutoAnything has a StopTech kit which includes banjo bolts etc. Front and rear kits = $130 but I will need to buy a $25 14mm x 2.0 tap to drill & tap the fbody caliper brkts so really $155.

So for a $10 difference, I am leaning towards the ZZP kit to 1. Support local business and 2. I don't have to mess with drilling and tapping for the stock w body bolts.

ZZP fbody caliper kit: http://shop.zzperformance.com/store/p/402-FBody-Caliper-Install-Kit.aspx
I might even go for the 5th line while I have the system open: http://shop.zzperformance.com/store/p/436-5th-Stainless-Brake-Line.aspx

I've read that the ZZP lines can be ordered longer so you don't have to mess with getting the bracket just right and worry about the lines stretching taught. I'm guessing if I ordered some standard fbody lines, they won't be as long and I will have to mess with insuring the lines are setup properly? Anyone care to share their experiences both ways?

I had the SS lines When i had my GTP with the GXP brake setup. extended lines however i made a custom u because i didnt like the angle they would be at when at full left/right lock heres a pic the piece of line was already premade with fittings at autozone, just went back there to the pre-made brake line section and found a 4-5 inch piece, and bent it with the line bend tool

Here's a question.... I am planning on buying new f body calipers and brackets from Napa and they of course will be charging a core charge ($27.50 each). Will they be able to tell when I return a set of w body calipers and brackets to get my core charge back?

more than likey theyll just look for a caliper and throw it in the bin..its dishonest on ure side but hey its your call

more importantly why are you buying calipers new? i can see maybe the brackets but... I bet the calipers are crazy high prices

$49 each with bracket and hardware from NAPA. Well worth it IMO since I have new and know what I will be getting and this is going on my wife's car so piece of mind.

Ok consider that this is for MY 99 GTP (based on my VIN#). You'd be well over $400 with tax for the main pipes. This is not including the rubber lines, these are just the metal ones.

You'd be ALOT cheaper to just get bulk tubing, rent a pipe bender and a flare tool and make your own.

now bleed them so they feel right under your foot. air or no air, if the lines are weak, they will blow out when they want to.
