The Big Bad Brake Thread

Anybody have the length size on the longer front SS brake hoses? I just got a set of F&R SS brake hoses for the 98-02 Camaro/Firebird from StopTech

Ive read various fbody upgrade threads over the years on all sorts of forums. I think im going to commit and piece it out. I thought I read though I need to order Monte SS front rotors to work with the ls1 fbody calipers and brackets? I have an 04 GP gt1, I thought we had 10.9" single piston front setups, but I was reading in this thread that we 11.7" and I just need the brackets, calipers, and the sleeves. Little confusing to read over a long thread with lots of info.

Thanks for the help

Even Bigger is always better
There is a 13” brake option that is a dual piston sliding caliper that ZZP and W-body Store sells, I have not been able to figure out where the calipers come from and what vehicle the rotors come from, but I will update this info as soon as I do. This upgrade is again a straight forward bolt on if you buy the kit from ZZP or W-body store.
Baer brakes also makes a kit for us that uses their own calipers, pad, and rotors. Parts would be limited and only available through them which is the only downside, not really sure what the price on the kit is or where to find it, but there are a few GP’s with them on their cars.

If using the Earlier 13" BAER BRAKE KIT here are where the pads come from. (THIS IS NOT FOR THE 12" BAER KIT as that is the new kit they came out with and no longer make the 13" kit)

FRONT PADS: 88-96 Corvette
REAR PADS: 89-96 Corvette

BAER 13" Front EradiSpeed+ Rotor Upgrade $595.00 from BAER. This is a 2 piece design rotor.
You can also purchase 13 inch rotors from ZZP however, I do not know the quality of these rotors.
I am still searching for other alternatives as I have to replace my front rotors now.

Was going to do Brake Pads soon. Any recommendations on good pads for an 04+? Should I go ceramic on semi-metallic? I was looking at Hawk Performance HB451F.668 HPS if I go ceramic.

you can, but they will only feel like new or at their best with cut or new rotors.

cutting is cheap. 12 to 15 a rotor. give your local napa a call, some do it, some dont. advance has stores that will cut rotors also but not all of them.

Will C5 Vette calipers fit CTS-V Brembo brackets? I'm wanting to run these on 14" Shelby GT500 rotors as a variation of the CTS-V brake upgrade.

I would also like to find a way to run the Caddy 12.75" ( or larger) vented rotors on the back with e-brake capable calipers.... Has anyone researched that swap?

Thanks,
Cody

I run duralast gold max C+ which are a ceramic and supposed to be able to take high heat. I like them mainly cause there life time warranty and as long as there not completely shot and still look kinda decent I just take them in say I want to warranty them and bam new brake pads free pay $55 once and never pay again! Love auto zone

So, question, are LaCrosse Super front and rear brakes identical to GXPs? And I would assume I'll need F-body banjo bolts for front and rear, and that will be all I need in addition to the brakes? Also, for rotors, do I have to go OEM, or are there any other cheaper options that are good for the GXP brakes? Not really wanting to spend $250 on rotors, or if I just do the front $120....

The front calipers are the same just not drilled rotors. Still 13"s though. The rear is not the same. At least not 12" like the GXP.
Shouldn't need banjo bolts for a GXP swap.

Plenty of rotor options on rockauto.

Ah, so, should be a direct bolt-in. Sweet, thanks for the info!

Did some further searching, came across: http://www.getoverkilled.ca/wbodytech.html
12.7" drilled front rotors and dual piston aluminum calipers came on 05-08 Grand Prix GXP came with
12.7" front rotors and dual piston iron calipers came on 12-13 Impala police and 08-09 Buick Allure/LaCrosse Super (LS4)

So, the different is iron vs aluminum. Huh. Think the weight makes a lot of difference?

Scroll down a little to "Stage 3".

So...., DTS calipers are the same 12.7" iron as the Supers?

Yeah, I think that is the only difference between the Buick Supers and GXP.
And yes aluminum will always be lighter than cast iron.

Funny you bring up the DTS calipers. I really think the DTS and non V STS calipers are the same as the GXP. Front and rear. Never tested it out but they sure look VERY similar.

It's eaiser to find DTS/STS parts around here than Super and GXPs it seems.

The local yard might have an STS, be interesting to weight and compare.

How much weight difference is there between iron and aluminum on brakes, would it actually make any difference DD'n?

Are the GXP rears aluminum as well?
