The Big Bad Brake Thread

Can't use the C5/6 bracket. I tried.

Whats the different in the brackets? I would have thought the F-body and Vettes had the same size brakes so the brackets would be the same, I know the calipers are a little different but the calipers can be used on the F-body brakes bracket... so whats different to not let it work if you drill/tap the holes?

Where they mount to the knuckle is different. Different spacing etc. So you can't use the vette brackets on our cars. Just the part where the caliper mounts is the same.

After a weekend in the mountains, it became obvious this is a necessary upgrade, so I'm working on putting the parts together for the F-body conversion.

For anyone having trouble finding the banjo bolts, the current GM part number (until they change it again) is 11569590. I believe Earl's Performance 977517 are also the correct size.

if you ride the brakes the whole way down, it wont matter what brakes you have, your over heating them by using them to long.

a good rule to follow is to lightly hit the brakes till you slow down 10 mph, then let the car roll back up to the speed limit, then slow down 10 mph again, repeat as needed. this gives the brakes have a chance to cool off. and not burn up the pads or warp the rotors.

you'll love how your car comes to stop with f bodys tho. its almost like your driving a newer car.

I know all that already, I only faded them noticeably once, and got them cooled again quickly no problem ... The problem is they're just wimpy with 4 adults and luggage in the car, not confidence inspiring at all.

the f body up grade will fix that for you, get good rotors and pads and SS brake lines. get matching rotors and pads for the stock rears.

so im seeing 97 to 03 brake upgrades ppl are getting the f body or gxp ive got an 05 gtp whats a good brake upgrade I can do that ill notice because my rotors and brakes seems to be vibrating under hard braking especially when im at the track they suck at slowing me down

Better pads would be the best option. Your front brakes area already pretty decent as per: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Amf4bUUWhZJedDB4ZnBLQTlVZVgyMFVyR1VEUkdTdVE#gid=0

If you have 17" wheels, consider the GXP setup. Note for the rears you'll have to change a whole bunch of other parts to keep a working parking brake. Not that it seems to matter anymore given many cars have electronic parking brakes. Some even keep applying the brakes until you touch the gas pedal even if you just driving around.

rotor 3.jpg

Previous owner told me when I bought my 03 GTP that he had upgraded the front brakes to 02 Camaro rotor and pads with 04 GP rotors. After I replaced the pads I noticed the uneven wear on the outside of the rotors, both sides. Thought maybe the rotors were bad and replaced them with new 04 GP rotors. Same where pattern. Read up and saw that the correct rotor to use is the 02 Camaro/f-body. Bought ANOTHER set of rotors and still getting uneven contact. What gives? wear is identical on both sides. Outer edge on outside of rotors, full contact on inside of rotors

Looks like maybe uneven wear/high spot on the pads. Did you check the pads with a straight edge? They would have worn to the pattern of the old rotors, and putting new rotors with the same pads could cause this until the pads wear down to flat.

I don't believe the bedding-in is the problem. I ordered a new hardware pack and will take everything apart and clean everything real nice before putting them back together, then go ahead with the bedding process.
Got lucky, the guys at advance let me return the 04 rotors even though they were used on the car for a couple hundred miles and I had thrown out the boxes. :th_thumb-up:

pads were not worn to the old rotors, in fact they were a little worn on the spots they were making contact on all three sets of rotors

So the Cadillac ATS comes with brembos and from what I can tell the standard wheels are 17"s. There isn't much information out on them yet but from what I could find the ATS has a 12.7" front rotor. What I was thinking was GXP rotors and ATS 4 piston brembos. So I decided to try to bolt the ATS calipers on my car to see if they cleared my 17" bullitt wheels. The calipers bolt on 100% no problem, the wheels do not clear lol.

New clips didn't do anything. Pulled the wheels again and looked some more. It seems the calipers are spread open wider on the edges which would explain the wear pattern I am getting. don't know how they got like that. Possibly from the previous owner running the 11 1/2" 2004 GP rotors.
