My motor has 81,000 and has never used Synthetic oil. Is too late to start? Will I doom myself to a leaky motor?
 


some say yes, some say no.

im a believer that synthetic is a sham. i buy whatever is cheapest when i go to the store and my motor runs just fine.
 
Meh...its a toss up but I get a deal since my buddy I grew up with runs the O'Rielly's so I get Mobil 1...always have...if I didn't have a hook up I'd be doing the $9.99 O'Rielly Oil Changes :D
 
I only run RP, and it showed with how clean my engine was on my tear down. Looked brand new.

If I have to use a dino oil, I use Exxon Superflo. My grandfather rebuilt engines and always found engines that ran it were the cleanest.
 
synthetic oil outperforms normal oil hands down. I used to use mobil 1 and liked it but since i lost my job i run walmart brand full synthetic and have had no problems. They all have to comply with SAE standards, so i dont think one is going to be a bad oil just cause it cheaper, just may not have as many additives. Its $17 for the 5 quart jug btw.

Well...Pennzoil meets SAE standards and it sucks ass :p
 
What I was getting at however is that the synthetic molecules are smallers and more like to pass by seals that had swelled to fill sealed areas with regular oil.
 
doubt it, run it and see what happens, if it does start to leak, switch back. If it does leak then it means there was a problem to begin with.
 


Not really. Had a '95 Eclipse and tried to run Synthetic in it. Started it up and it was seeping out from under the valve cover. Went back and got dino oil and it ran fine, no leaks...reason being Syn. is thinner than dino oil IMO and can fits through the spots that the thicker dino oil would have filled and not leaked from.
 
Synthetic isn't "thinner". It's much more uniform, where as a conventional will be a blend of long chain and short chain molecules. Those long chain molecules can help clog up a leak, but a clogged leak is still denotes a problem. Why do people prefer a band-aid over actually fixing a problem?
 


yes, something that i have time to work on. ive always been rushed with my car since it is a daily driver. nothing can ever take more than a weekend.

taking the motor out and rebuilding it is not a weekend job.
