Swaping engine and trans from top ( first timer)



Im just staring at this big ass block of metal trying to decided what to take off and install to new combo first. Ill start the starter what do you guys suggest i remove next, im sure theres a convenient way i dont know of.

I guess this is the part where i need to go get new fluids and other small parts like spark plugs and gaskets etc. Can you guys help me out with which ones need replacing (some maybe reusable?) or what other parts may be a good idea to pick up?

forgot to mention i got code p0463 (fuel level sensor) before pulling engine i had a hesitation when starting the vehicle it would crank and not start as if it didnt have gas. I would have to do it again a few times before it actually started. Is this related to that code?

plugs and wires, oil and a filter are all good to get.

they may have drained the tranny, if its got nothing on the dip stick, you need 8 qts of new tranny fluid too.

if the tranny is dry buy a new trans filter too. once its in the car, then drop the pan change the filter, then add the new fluid. this is also a good time to install a shift kit, they run 40 bucks. you got the engine out, you can do a shift kit lol
 
Plugs and wires to connect what?want to make sure i get the right ones. I edited my last post with a question about a fuel level code i was getting before
 
iridium spark plugs and what ever store brand plug wires they got are fine.


not related. http://www.obd-codes.com/p0463 your gas gauge was not working right is my guess. you can fix that too. its the sender on the gas pump.


the poor starting could have been a dirty tb, very common on these cars 04 up enen more so. pop it off i bet the back side is caked with carbon.
 


are the wires not reusable? Mine seem to be in pretty good cond but if new ones would make a difference ill def purchase,just curious.
 
Coolant, oil and 10 quarts of trans fluid is where I would start. Any place that pulls a trans should automatically drain the fluid. If not, they are hacks. Some fluid will come out of the clutch packs and converter and end up in the pan, but it won't have a full 13 quarts which is what a dry transmission from a fresh rebuild will need. Based on my experience.. you'll need ~10 quarts. Once you are ready to start it dump in 8 quarts then you'll be fine to start and add more based on dipstick readings.
Spark plugs and spark plug wires are dependent on how yours are doing. I'd automatically toss plugs in if they have over 10K on them.

As for gaskets.. you shouldn't really need any. You have a complete motor/trans right? Just do a trans filter kit and if you chose a shift kit.

On parts to swap.. I thought you got the same engine. Look things over and see if anything is needing to be swapped. Anything that looks different.
 
Ok thanks for all the tips everyone. So far the mating went well. Joining the trans and eng at the bolt spots was a whole bunch of fun lots of cursing. Ill be googling what a shift kit is. Im a bit stuck on how to remove these.any suggestions?

Look up the axle replacement thread .. by me. It'll tell you that you basically smack it from the backside. Since those are in the trans..I'd be concerned that it's filled with fluid
 


they busted the cv joint apart and left the end in the tranny, why bill thinks its fill of fluid, i think hes right too. pull the dip stick, is the fluid way over the full line? if so its full of fluid. some will leak out if the tranny is tiled to one side or the other with the axles out.
 
Those pieces are not held in by bolts. You took your axles out to pull your trans... so you should follow the same method to get those out of ...

Wait..that trans is the one you just took out? ugh.. you took the axles apart versus taking them out of the transmission. Those are the inner cups of the CV shafts. The brown sludge is your axle grease.

I was able to get em out and reinstall in the other tran. I thought i pulled the axles the right way dam.. That was a pic of my busted trans.
Ill be going to the store soon need to get a new radiator as well. Any good suggestions? i have oreilly napa autozone and pep near by.
