Swap 1997 GP GT engine and Tranny for 2001; Possible?

Can I put a 2001 Grand Prix GT Coupe engine and Tranny into a 1997 Grand Prix GT Sedan? Are they the same mounts etc...?

No tranny won't work like dsmuts said. It uses vaccum to opperate. 98+ does not. Now if you got a trans from a 97 GTP it would work. Engine will work tho.

Nope. But close.

97-02 GTP are all 4T65e HD, non vacuum.

98-02 GT's are all 4T65e non HD

97 GT is a 4T60e, vacuum assisted trans. Year only.

I say "97-02" for the previous transmissions because 03+ has some new changes.

So basically if he wants a direct swap with no modding needed, he needs a 4T60e trans.

You said eng and trans so answer is YES mounts are the same but you have to use the PCM from the 2001 as there is a lack of some wires in the fuse box you need some more wires run from the fuse box to the PCM. easy way is to use the harness from the 2001. You can call EDmorad parts for a used harness or maybe ZZP they used to sell the adapter wiring. When we did it we took the bottom of the fuse block apart and replaced the bottom section with the newer harness. A number of people have done this mainly to put a 98 or newer GTP eng/trans in the 97's. If the trans in the 97 is good you could also just change the eng. :th_thumbsup-wink:

What where the changes to the 03 just out of curiosity? I know it had some things different than most years but I didn't know about the trans.

You could do it if you wanted to add 5 wires to the pcm and have someone program the trans info in. Right now your trans in the 97 has it's pressure being controlled by vacuum. The 98+ pressure was controlled via soleniod. This is one of the noticable differences from 4T60 to 4T65.

Add 5 wires and program. Poof..done. Been there..done that.
