Supercharger sound..

So the last few says it started making a sound and me thinking its the Coupler got a new one to change it out but my old coupler was fine, still making the sound very loud, it's not coming from the nose, would I need a whole new supercharger?

The 95, no. What year is your car? assuming its a 97-03, in which case you need a Gen 3.

What kind of noise is it making? Rocks tumbling is the coupler. Take the belt off and see if the pulley has any play in it.

Could have possibly injested something, and chipped a rotor. Also, needle bearings could be shot.

Well just removed the belt and started it and same sound.. Like metal, car runs fine, also sound kind of goes away with AC on.. I'm confused

Can you take a video of it?

Metal doesnt really make a sound, it just sorta sits there....

Is it a scraping sound, grinding, or is it a clanking sound?

My 02 GTP would make a bad knocking noise...thought I had rod knock. Ended up being the A/C Clutch. if I turned the AC off, it went away. Back on, it'd start knocking. Though sometimes they do grind while free spinning.

Okay, so it's a rattling noise.

Pop the other belt off, see if it goes away. If it does, it's either the AC gone bad, or possibly a totally shot tensioner (they chatter like that once they go bad)

Look at the tensioner where the alternator is mounted. Is it bucking back and forth?? There's a chance that it could be the S/C and the rotors are hitting each other a little, but I would think that noise would be faster.

Get a long wrench or screwdriver, and put one end against various parts of the engine, and the other end against your ear. It will transmit the sound like a stethoscope. (please dont use the pointy end of anything against your ear)

Do that to the S/C, tensioners, LIM, etc, until you find where it is the loudest. Then, try to isolate exactly where it's coming from.

Well I took off the belt and felt the crank and AC, there's some movement in the crank pulley not much but some, I can turn the crank a little hit with my hand idk if that's supposed to happen the AC pulley is kind of weird it has little metal parts I can move and it makes sound but doesn't seem like that's abnormal.. Could it be my crank?

when you say the crank moves, in what way, like you turned the engine some? <<<normal

or side to side play or in and out play?<<<<<not normal

oh the a/c clutch, the part the belt rides on should turn, they dont always spin smooth sounding, but it should snug.

the center of it should not turn freely. thats the compressor part, it only spins when the a/c is on.

if you turn the a/c on and the noise goes away its the clutch bearing going bad. and you would need a new compressor.

Well the sound is horrible when starting the car it has loud metal clunking, the crank moves in and out just a tad, I have a bad feeling it that because of how bad the sound is. The sound goes down a considerable amount when the AC is on but not but not completely gone.

unless the balancer on the crank is shot. like the pulley part turns on the mounts or its loose. it sounds more like the a/c clutch.

post up a vid if you can, that helps sometimes. lots of ears.
