At idle my supercharger makes a rattling noise until u increase the rpms but at idle it resumes the sound.. Where can i find a rebuild kit? How much? My local auto parts stores are saying 1000 for a rebuilt s/c and they dont offer a rebuild kit.. My car has 170k
 


Ummm...Personally I'd contact Reptile...and buy a ported supercharger at the same time :D WAAAY cheaper too and he does great work. Rebuilt mine and ported the case...awesome whine too :D
 
the rattle you are hearing is the SC coupler inside the snout. all you would require is a new coupler, and 2 bottle of SC fluid.

ZZP has both I believe.

so the coupler the nice new shiney piece wit the three pins i would assume?? never messed with a s/c before.. how hard is it to change? zzp?? is that a web site?
 
The coupler is the round piece in the first pic with the three holes. It actually has six holes. Three for the rotors' pegs to slide into, and three for the snout's pegs to slide into. It joins them so the snout can drive the rotors. Hence it being called a "coupler".
 


I am expieriencing the same kind of knocking sound. I just had my engine rebuilt because i blew a rod. My mechanic said everything else in the car is fine, besides the additional pieces he replaced. However the knocking started after the engine was rebuilt. He recommended I have the supercharger rebuilt. Should I go with his idea or should I change the coupler as discussed earlier?

Take the supercharger belt off and start the car. Yes it's fine. If the noise is gone then it is blower related. If it isn't...well then I'd be taking it back to that mechanic.
 
take the sc belt off, then with the car off, grab the sc pulley, and turn it back and fourth, like snap it 1 inch each way, if you feel slop its just the coupler gone bad, with new sc oil and a coupler your at 50 or less to repair it.
 


When the engine was being rebuilt he had me go to the shop and turn the pulley like you said and it was fine. He didn't notice the knocking until they had started it up and he told me about it when i picked the car up from him. I'm not a mechanic but is it difficult to take the belt off and put it back on? And is it difficult to change the coupler myself?
 
So with the belt off and me turning the pulley if it doesn't turn smoothly its the coupler gone bad? What if it turns smoothly?
 
take the belt off see if it still make the noise. no noise its the s/c, if you still get the knocking sound its your rebuilt engine.


like blue said, both are easy to remove yourself.
 
No I mean start the car with the blower belt off.

If it still has the noise you're describing than it isn't supercharger related.

If the noise goes away then it is.

See what I'm getting at?
 


Its not turning that shows its bad. Its rocking it. The 6 holes in the coupler are a tight fit when its new, but from torquing repeatedly it will eventually wallow out the holes into a egg shape and cause a rattle. We usually relate it to "marbles in the supercharger" ype sound. If you go to youtube.com and search for supercharger coupler, there should be some videos of what it sounds like when its bad, to compare to, and possibly a how-to-replace if you don't think you can figure it out yourself.

Verses replacing, I would spend the $50 and try this for starters.

EDIT: What they don't tell you is the old supercharger fluid will stink something fierce and will soak into your skin and stink for days. No soap will remove the smell. USE GLOVES!!!
 
Oh ok, sorry like I said I'm not a mechanic so I am a little slow haha. On my lunch break I will try this. I greatly appreicate it y'all. Last question though, if the noise only occurs with the belt on of course it is supercharger related like y'all said. If this is the case, will replacing the coupler solve the problem or could it possibly be something else?
 
It COULD be something else, but this is usually the culprit. I've replaced mine before, replaced the engine and need to do it again.
