supercharger noise at idle

Helo all!
I now have 106,000 on a 2000 GTP, original owner. Sucked out the SC oil at 100,000 and put fresh in - filled to threads at cold condition.

What I have now is a whirring noise at cold start up that continues when you manually increase the idle. The noise went away when hot and back at idle again. I've read the thread about rattling noises and this doesn't seem to be this - well at least not yet. The noise is loud enough to get your attention. My wife says she "kinda" heard this AFTER driving it yesterday.

Any suggestions? Add an additive? What could be used instead of the GM little expensive bottle of SC oil? Would replacement of what bearings be good to do at this mileage and age? Email me if you like - I'm the kinda guy that wants to fix this ASAP.

Thanks alot,

Stan:th_scratchhead:

First off, welcome to the forum. Happy to have you here. You need to post this up in the correct section to get a good and quick response. Put in the L67 engine section.

Are you sure the noise is coming from the actuall SC or is it coming from your air intake box? My car makes a simaliar noise when its cold but it's from my K&N filter. Your SC coupler is what usually makes the rattling sound. If it were me I would probably replace the coupler and rebuild the snout. I'm rebuilding mine this winter and my blower has less than 90k on it.

The supercharger will rattle if any of the bearings are worn, or if the coupler is going bad.

A whine usually leads to a power steering pump, or maybe one of the idler/tensioner pulleys also.

Start by taking off the supercharger belt, start the car and see if the whine goes away. If it does, then check all of the other pulleys on the supercharger drive with the engine off.

Check for play in them, see if they "catch" because of a bad bearing.

I've even seen where the belt whines.....it sounds weird I know, but it happens.

Thanks for the insight and information. I changed the SC fluid and haven't heard the noise since. The belt is a little worn, and there's alot of "belt powder" on the cooling over flow tank and in the front of the engine. GM replaced a valve cover gasket on a recall, and until this happend I wasn't paying attention. Thanks again....

I have a similar issue but i couldnt find where to post it.. At idle my supercharger makes a rattling noise until u increase the rpms but at idle it resumes the sound.. Where can i find a rebuild kit? How much? My local auto parts stores are saying 1000 for a rebuilt s/c and they dont offer a rebuild kit.. My car has 170k
