It's surprising though how many people do actually fall for these scams.
What happens is that they know it is a scam, but they get the check and figure they'll deposit it and "see what happens".
And by "see what happens", means that if the bank makes the funds available they'll take the money.
So then their account gets frozen, and all of a sudden they are the victim, never mind they tried to take money that wasn't theirs and knowly defrauded the bank. Then they can't pay their mortgage or feed their kids and the bank is the bad guy not themselves for making poor decsions.
Also car dealerships like to kite checks.
