strong exhuast smell

So when driving my gtp today I.noticed a very strong exhaust smell when at stoplights. I've noticed it smelling a little before but it seemed worse today. I used to have the p0420 error code but I cleared it twice and since then (2 weeks) it hasn't gone on again.. also a couple days ago I scanned my car with a simple obd II scanner (ses light was not on) and I got the p0171. I cleared the code and scanned it 2 days later nothing came up. Where shouldvi start?
 


P0171 is a vacuum leak.

Find it and fix it.

P0420 is a low catalyst code...and the strong exhaust smell is a leak somewhere in the system, could be a clogged cat as well.

Use the search...and google...there is tons of info out there.
 
ya but i don't get why
1 for the p0171 the ses light went on and why when i scan it now it doesn't come up.
2 why the p0420 has magically disappeared.
