Street vs Dyno tuning

What are the various advantages/disadvantages of each? I actually don't know enough about each yet to ask specific questions but getting a thread going on the general discussion of the 2 seemed like a good idea. Anyone have preferences? Good or bad experiences with each?
 


a street tune allows you to tune for how the car will be driven all the time. you can tweak shift points (throttle %, mph, and upper shift point) and firmness, you can add timing in the cruising area to get better MPG and to not have to push into the pedal so far to pass people, etc. there is all sorts of things that make it better, especially that you will be tuning in a real world environment on roads you would normally be driving on. i do not suggest you tune in the city though, but you make your way out to the country a little so you can get higher speeds and have a little more room to 'play'.

a dyno tune i always saw that the only useful aspect of it was that the car is dialed in at WOT and that is about it. i always think of it as a max effort tune just for the numbers.

or you can get a dyno tune from someone that knows the platform really well
 


i suppose you could, but most of the time the people working there are trying to rush you off the dyno and get it done.

So what you're saying is that dyno tuning is in no way inferior to street tuning if you don't suck at picking businesses to work with.

i dont think the rollers put as much load on the motor as the car driving around on roads would either.
 


There are different types of dynos. You can have a loaded or unloaded dyno. There have been big arguments on which is better and more accurate.

In theory a loaded dyno with an eddy brake and the correct settings should produce close to real world conditions the same as a street tune. Although a street tune is going to let the driver feel the tune more because you are driving the car.

I honestly think that doing both would be optimal but if I had to choose between the two I would do a street tune because it's all about how it feels. This is especially true if it is your daily driver.
