Strange Ignition

My son's 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix GT has a strange feature installed on it. You can not start this car with the key. You must put the key in the ignition and turn it as would normally to start the engine and then there is a push button installed to start the engine. Have any of you heard of this? Has this somehow bypassed the factory security system? Maybe this is why the car did not come with any key fob remote to open and close the doors or trunk. Let me know what you think?

ive never heard of something like that before. im guessing its probly an aftermarket thing the previous owner installed? i know you can install push button starts on these cars (although not the brightest thing to do cuz someone could just smash your window and drive away lol) but ive never heard of turning the key and then a push button start.

I am just curious if I can get a key fob remote and if it will still work with this mod being done. Right now we have to use the key to open the door.

When I got my car it had no key fob. I got one off of EBAY for $25 and could not get it to program.....so that's when I installed the remote start, which has door and trunk release included on the key fob.

This is my key fob for my remote start which is awesome to have.

thats called a "kill switch" my most people its not factory it is usually in a car thats been in a bad neighborhood it makes the car harder to steal, there super annoying to deal with just take it to a local shop they should be able to remove it

Call your local dealership, give them the VIN# and ask them if it has the RPO codes for keyless entry, and what the FOB # is. Retail is usually $72.81 but it can change depending on dealer, likely being an 03 model you will need a FOB# 10335582. I would still call and check first tho. Good luck.

97-03 Factory remotes don't have a Remote Start feature tho, just FYI. If this is something you want, go aftermarket.

Ya, you have to put the key into the ignition, set it to on, so when you push the button it will start. Otherwise in off without the key it will just be a button that does nothing. Likely the Previous Owner installed it and just cut the starter wire and hooked it to the switch, so if you roll the key all the way to start it won't get anywhere, you have to push the button & use the key.

My take on what he said anyways.

from what he said at the start of the thread ...

You must put the key in the ignition and turn it as would normally to start the engine and then there is a push button installed to start the engine.

... it sounds like he actually has to turn the key as if cranking it to start the engine and then push the button. thats what i got from what he said.

from what i gathered you have to turn the key to run then push a hidden button to make it start, im assuming that its not a "mod" bill just something someone put in to prevent the car from being stolen

How wrong.

The op stated the vehicle still requires the key.

As bill has linked, z3ro created a how to.

I've actually read a bunch of push button start threads. Almost all of them require the key for the theft deterrent. One guy was talking about getting a newer proximity type setup and doing away with the key. I don't know that it has been completed yet though.
