stock wheel material?

I've been curious about whats on the stock "torque star" wheels myself for a long time. I have a junk one and finally was prompted by this post to go sand a spot on it with some 100 grit to find out. My conclusion about my wheel (tire on) does not conflict with any previous statements here. It is that...

The front is chromed, the back is bare aluminum, and that nasty looking area in between is where the plating transitions away. Plating on aluminum is more difficult than with steel, and it doesn't last as long. Due to porosity and other properties of aluminum. So its chrome but not like 1956 Buick bumper triple chrome plating, its less durable and sensitive to the wrong cleaner as known from this ugly wheel I've got. You are wise to ask around. I've been here quite awhile and never found a good answer but mine respond to dabs of whatever mild polish I have around and a soft rag with lots of elbow grease.

I haven't tried that cleaner. I'd want something safe for alum or chrome.

I have been researching our stock wheels as of late, and the finishes for the "Torque-Star" wheel are.....

1) sparkle silver
2) polished
3) polished w/ gold tint

Try Sonax Wheel Cleaner full effect and you will like it. It is safe on different types of wheel finish such as aluminum, alloys, clearcoated and anodized.
