Stock exhaust sound with headers

OK, anyone here like me who doesn't want to hear the exhaust on their 3800? I see lots of guys changing mufflers and resonators to get it louder, but I don't think I'll ever like the sound of this engine. I have the SD headers installed, stock cat back. I think it sounds like crap, especially while cruising slowly when I can hear it echo back. In the garage it sounds like a sick diesel. Stock sounded a lot better, where I could just hear the engine grunt when I stepped on it.

Anyone here done anything to make it QUIETER that won't affect flow? I'm thinking hiflo cat or resonator, something I can slip in where the removable piece is in the downpipe.
 


Headers are always going to be louder than stock manifolds. The only way to get around that is to have headers made of really thick tubing like say 1/4". I had a friend that hated it as well on a small block no less but he didn't like it he tried header wrap and that didn't' work he had Dynamat under hood applied and it helped a little. He ended up buying a set of Sanderson cast manifold headers.

run a single muffler set up like my regal. it just sounds louder from under the hood, them thin pipes like stated above ^^^. i got sd headers, a 32 inch res, hi flow cat, and a stock walker muffler. sounds the same out the tail pipe to me. aka nice and quiet. as i hate the sound of these cars when loud too.
 
I'd install a giant ass resonator from like a newer impala or install a vibrant ultra quite resonator.

I installed one on my older V8 truck after I went catless and it took all the rasp away.
 
OH! Didn't even think about the headers thin construction causing the sound. Duh. Yeah its mostly just the engine bay noise that's getting me. I'm gonna have to have someone do a drive by with the car to see how it sounds from outside. Inside though its sickly sounding :(. I might try wrapping them real thick. Should help? Wish dynomat was rated for the temps, probably be real nice then. Maybe coat them in cement...
 
Are you a baby? when I first started my car when I got it It got headers, catless, reso less right into the stock catback, I could hear myself picking my nose.......
 


A cat will quite it down. You could try a better resonator. Other then that I'm not sure your going to get it white per say. Better off getting use to it, use some peel n seal in the interior. You can't expect quite especially when your modding a vehicles exhaust.

Lol. Wasn't used to the tinny header sound is all. If I roll it out of the garage before I start it and keep my windows up when I'm passing echo inducing objects, I guess I'll live. :) It doesn't sound much different out the exhaust. My last project car was an 03 mach 1. I'm just used to exhaust mods actually making the car sound better is all.

the cat i installed changed nothing.

dynamat doesn't have the underhood thick with the reflective coating anymore?
 


Insulating the hood might help a little. I'll probably try that peel and seal since its a cheap mod. Probably most of what I hear I think reflected off the ground.

I'm not sure where you live but if you have high humidity then don't wrap them, even if they are sst as most headers are 400 series set which has more iron in it and it will rust within a year a 304 will pit where the wrap contacts and a 316 is pretty good, but good luck finding them. If you live out in the desert you may get away with it. I don't have any experience at low humidity levels and headers. I was thinking more of adding large prices of bent plate to the outside and weld them on. It would be a little extreme,'but that's what I would do, luckily I have the equipment to do it. I would be willing to help if you need. Or you could just suck it up:th_winking:.
