Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Still have this problem after replacing stuff. *VIDEO*

Ok, sorry guys for the wait, i was out of town for awhile. Heres my 99 gp with 144k, It had a stalling issue and so I replaced the crankshaft positioning sensor, that solved the stalling problem (so I think). Now I still have this knocking/squeaky noise. I decided to replace the harmonic balancer also. That did nothing. Now I feel I ruined the thrust bearing. The car hesitates when accelerating a bit, and the noise doesnt leave here it is dsadfr4w :: MVI_0027.mp4 video by camryLEz - Photobucket before trashing this motor and finding a new used one, I would like to see my options, because under this knocking squeaking noise the engine still has a very good note sound to it. Side note- I replaced plugs because they were old and changed the oil and filter, if that means anything. thankyou in advance for any help gpf dudes

EDIT: The smoke you see is seafoam, I ran some through the brake booster for the hell of it holding onto the chance that it may work a miracle. obviously not but trying doesnt hurt

I believe so, from the naked eye it looks to be aligned right, and the knocking seems to be coming from the topend

Hmm, that light tick almost sounds like a rocker or something, but when you moved the camera over to the drivers side right near the end of the vid I heard a lower, deeper sounding knock with a different pitch to it.

I'm wondering if your flywheel is cracked? When you changed the oil did you notice any sparkly pieces in it that would indicate a bearing?

Have you removed the belt and started it to see if the noise goes away?

Wait, after reading your post in another thread it seems you drove the new balancer on w/ a hammer? With the motor running take a look straight down on the balancer from above and see if it is wobbling at all. It should not have any movement to it other than in a circle. Since it seems to be running in-time I assume that you got the new balancer lined up w/ the crank key when you re-installed it. But with banging it on I'm not sure what else could be affected, other than things inline w/ the crank (bearings, flywheel). How hard exactly did you smack the balancer to get it set on there? Just tap tap, or a few good hits w/ a 2lb hammer?

yes, it was actually a pain getting it on with the hammer. tapped it 10 times atleast, i feel like we could of broke a bearing while tapping it??

First thing.. please link all your other relevant threads. They are important to the diagnosis and when possible should all be kept in teh same thread to make it easier to follow the issue.

On one thought, I'd say rod bearing, but a cold start is usually more quiet and less perfect in the exact speed of how it hits. Like some have said, it's possibly flex or balancer. Maybe even the balancer out of position. Did you sit the balancer on the keyway solidly before you hit it etc?

yes, we made sure of lining the balancer up on the key, rod bearing is what my dad thinks. I was told you have to relearn the crankshaft sensor after installing a new one, or the timing will be off. could that of affected anything?

CASE or Crank Variation learn is often not done and things work great. I've had two cars that had work done, ran horribly. You would have sworn something was done wrong to them. A crank learn and they purred perfectly.

Your noise however is mechanical, a crank learn is not likely to fix that.

It kinda sounds valvetrain-ish, but it's difficult to tell how much the camera distorts the noise... Collapsed lifter perhaps? You can pull the valve-covers without much trouble and check all that jazz. Just a long shot, but it could be an easy fix.

the valve cover is the black plastic piece on top of the engine? Or do I have to go further down?

My 98 GP did the same thing then locked up, after pulling the motor and tearing it down, 3 connecting rod bearing were gone and laying in the pan

Whoa, wait a minute. If you cannot identify a valve cover, and have already installed a balancer w/ a hammer then you may want to bite the bullet and take it to a shop and let them identify the noise/issue. It may be very much worth the time/money.

I'm all for learning, but when it comes down to my motor making a strange noise that may or may not indicate its untimely death approaching I would def. want a professional opinion. Maybe even see if the shop will let you be present when they diagnose it that way they can point things out and explain it to you, thus you gaining that knowledge for future use. I know I've spent a few times in a shop w/ a tech trying to figure something out and they were happy to show/explain what they were doing. Now I can usually figure it out myself. It just comes w/ time and experience. We can only diagnose things so far on the interwebs before someone w/ a trained ear/eyes needs to see it in person.

thanks for all the help, sorry for the late reply. Yeah fordman you have a major point here. The car is getting towed to the shop tomorrow, ill let you know how it goes
