Steering rack

04 compG, my mom was driving it to work. Said it was really hard to steer. I checked the power steering fluid it was out. I filled it back up, its running out right at the top of the rack where the steering shaft goes in. I've read that these cars are hard on racks. What are my options? Replace the rack? If so which one? Rock auto has an ACdelco reman for $269.79. They also offer just a seal kit. I was just wondering if it really is a common problem and what most guys do. Thanks in advance!

Replace the rack. They do go, but not at a crazy rate. Sounds like typical wear and tear for a 9 year old car. I went with the Delco reman. Found one on Ebay. Don't know if the 04+ cars had Magnasteer or not so you may want to check for that option.

If is it leaking out from up there it may just be a line problem on the pressue side. they sell a new hose with the fittings at parts stores for about 15 bucks.

I bought this one and haven't had a bit of trouble out of it.

I'm not 100% sure where it's coming from. I haven't gotten it up on the lift yet. Gotta finish a motor swap in a Taurus first then I can get it up and figure out where it's coming from.

I got one from my local parts store for $161 they had it in stock. My car is a NV8 car. Thanks for the advice guys!

Got it all changed out. Wasn't a bad job at all. I have a lift tho. So that helps. Did it in about 2 hours. The old one had no bushings left what so ever. It moved back and forth 1/2 an inch. I ended up replacing both front sway bar links too. What a difference in the handling department! She goes where she's pointed now. No more turn in and have it move around in the corner. I'm happy with it. Thanks again guys!

Hey 98ctd, I have a question. I have an '04 Grand Prix and I think I will have to replace the rack. I have a leak around the driver's side of the rack, so I think I will have to replace it.

When you replaced the rack in your car, did you have to unbolt and slightly raise the back of the subframe? I saw in the AutoZone repair guide that the subframe has to be lifted. AutoZone's repair help does encompass several GM models over a high number of years, so maybe on an '04 Grand Prix this step is not necessary.

Thanks for your input.

Yea I had both of the rear bolts in the subframe out. Lowered it down nice and easy. It really wasn't a hard job. I was surprised

Yes, lower the subframe, not raise it. My error. I did catch a U-tube video about replacing a rack on these cars. It seemed straight forward. Using a lift would be a big difference maker. I guess a floor jack can support the subframe.
Thanks for the insight.

Yeah racks are fairly easy, i did mine in about an hr drunk lol
