starts then dies

hey guys. Was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on an issue im having. My car starts perfectly from a cold start, and always runs perfectly once started. But every now and then, once the car is warmed up, ill shut it off then restart it a few minutes later, and it will start right up then die. The tach jumps right up then falls right back down. Sometimes ill press on the accelerator a little to prevent it from dying. Car is a 2001 with 150,000 miles. Ive ran 2 bottles of chevron techron in the gas, which has made no difference. I also took the IAC valve out and cleaned it with carb cleaner, and used a screwdriver and shop rag to clean inside the hole it goes in. Any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

Clean the inside of the throttle body as said above, especially where the butterfly flap seals on the edges. Carbon build up can cause it to stick closed on warm starts and used to make my GP stall almost every warm start.

The mass airflow sensor is also an easy one to troubleshoot. Warm the car up and shut it off, then unplug the sensor and see if it starts no problem. If it's the sensor it will fire right up with it unplugged. It may trip a check engine light though, so don't be worried if it comes on. It will go out after a few key cycles.

.

i was under the assumption it was closed (and supposed to be closed) at any time my foot is not on the accelerator. Its not drive by wire. I guess im not 100% sure on that though. Regardless, i havent had a chance to clean the throttle body yet. just too cold this week.

i tried cleaning the MAF and it made no difference. i tried unplugging the MAF and it made the problem worse. It would start, the idle would jump to 2000, then fall right back down and die. normally it starts, jumps to 1000-1200ish then dies. i also forgot to mention that several seconds of cranking is required to get it started back up when this happens..

is there any chance it could be the IAC going bad? just completely acting crazy?

for what its worth, it ended up being the fuel pressure regulator. It started leaking gas into the vacuum line, which i believe caused an extremely rich condition during warm starts
