Starting Problem

So I recently bought a 2004 GP, and yesterday I came across a problem when I tried starting it up. It would start up, all the gauges would go on, the lights, etc. but wouldn't stay started. I would have to hit the gas in order to keep it started. After a little research, and seeing some other stories the same as mine I was convinced that my throttle body was the problem, so I bought some Gumout Carb Cleaner, and come to find out when I got to it, it is perfectly clean so I'm looking at a different problem. No Check Engine light comes on, just doesn't start up sometimes.

Has anybody had a similar problem, or have any advice?

Any help is appreciated.

funny i have a customer of mine says it wont stay started when cold unless you touch the gas then its fine most of the day it will start fine. i have yet to find out but it is an electronic throttle so the tps is built into this electrical box, i have taken it apart and cleaned it and also the gas pedal inside the car was filled with dust and lint. used air to blow it out, it made the engine light stay off but the car still starts funny when cold. if i find out or if you do please keep me posted. thanks

What does your tachometer do? The injectors could be clogged, thus having to push the pedal to increase fuel delivery. Seafoam or a specific fuel additive (not sure on a specific brand) would help clean them out. It might take a couple full fills with the additive to help, but its just a thought...

What is Seafoam? I have used the Lucas fuel injector cleaner in the past but my car still does the same thing. I have a 98 GTP and every once in awhile when I go to start it it will like half start then the rpms just die. I start it again and push the gas a little and it fires right up.

SeaFoam is a very good FI cleaner, I use it myself. :th_thumb-up: I posted a link if your interested. But, I must add, IMO only put it in your gas tank.

the 04 has the "drive by wire" so the throttle body is the coplete unit a few hundred bucks, my customer had installed a new ac delco fuel pump about 6 months ago, and he has a similar problem only when cold. he showed me one day and it baffled me lol maybe it is fuel pump related, try to prime the pump once then turn the key off and try to start without touching the throttle and lemme know ehat happends.

Well, it ended up being the throttle body. At first glance it was pretty spotless but I guess I didn't dig deep enough. For those having this same problem, it's a simple job takes 5 minutes, and my car has been running flawlessly ever since. I bought some Gumout Carb Cleaner from Autozone and wiped away the gunk that was built up and that's all there was to it.

You can see where it was built up...it was nothing but a thick layer of pure black.

So for those having the same problem like I said, take a look inside there. If it's built up there's your problem if not it could be a bigger problem, but here's somewhere to start.
