SS intercooler help

well here goes, maybe you guys can be of some assistance, pull up a chair and listen to my story....
you all know i switched from N/A L36 to ZZP M90 kit, this was back in june. couldn't get the short stack intercooler to seal so i ran the kit just blown, and waited for better support from ZZP...so fast forward to Saturday i take a trip up to my buddies house to do the Short Stack installation, he did it on his regal so i figured i couldn't F it up. here's what we came up with, the car STILL has a vac leak under the snout and here's why....
ZZP uses a Gen5 bottom plate and Gen 3 top plate, no matter what i do i cannot get it to seal because of the different length of the bottom plate they tell me im not RTV it correctly, i think its nonsense that i can't just get 2 Gen 3 plates here are some pictures to explain

the only thing i can think of is to not run a gasket on the bottom to the LIM and just put RTV around the core, or ill just use copper spray on the LIM and bottom plate. any suggestions guys? im at my witts end, thanks-Nick

are you using alot of rtv??? When i installed mine the first 4 times it had a vacuum leak every time because i had the gaskets mixed up. i had to use a garlock gasket on the bottom of the core and a stock gasket on the top of the core. if its done the other way around it leaked like crazy under the snout. also dont put too much rtv! just a light coating all across the gasket

What do you mean by this?

ZZP uses a Gen5 bottom plate and Gen 3 top plate, no matter what i do i cannot get it to seal because of the different length of the bottom plate.

Are you talking about the i/c core? I'm not understanding that.

yes my short stack has 2 different plates that make up the core. the top is opened up like a Gen3 and the bottom plate is opened up like a Gen5. my LIM is a ported Gen3 so when the Short Stack goes on, the bottom plate is 1 inch longer than my stock opening, that is where my vacuum leak is coming from. im probably not going to run a gasket on the bottom and try to seal it with a bead of RTV, i cannot tell you the amount of money i wasted in gaskets on this car :th_shakinghead2:....also the bearings in the blower are no good and i have to buy another Gen3 from ZZP, there is a crazy grinding sound coming from the snout....i shoulda just put N2O on the L36

Is that how the ss is suppose to be? Thats what I would do. Just use rtv. Pick up some of the grey RTV as it's not as noticable.About the blower....Just talk to brian (Reptile) on here and he can rebuild one for ya no problem instead of you having to buy a new blower

according to ZZP all SS are shipped that way, i think its total bull but whatever. they are going to refund me once i ship them back this blower, it just sucks that i have to lay out another $600. im going to attempt this next sunday we'll see what happens

I just saw that you said you may use copper spray. Save yourself some headach and don't. It will be way to thin to seal anything. And before you apply the grey RTV Make sure the surfaces are clean!! Use a scotch brite pad and scuff all surfaces. Then wipe it down with like brake clean or something that evaporates on it's own. Then apply the rtv ect. Sometimes the ic's arent perfectly straight so that may be why your having some issues if it's always happening in the same spot. You could even use some sand paper to scuff things up. buyt agian make sure the sufrace is free of oil and dust ect. Also let the rtv get a little tacky before you put it anything on. And let it dry all the way before you start it.

it was some idea i had.... we cleaned the core up nice with the scotch brite pads on the wheel thingy that uses the compressor. i dunno what you guys call em...my buddy works for Transit so he used a nice cleaner and stuff, were gunna attempt it again hopefully i can be finally intercooled

ITS ALIVE!!!!!!!!!! i got the core to seal this afternoon, no vac leaks, im going for a tune tomorrow to throw some timing at this pig!!!!!

aw come on, intercooling is no fun. :D

i cant justify the amount of work it is to install and keep up with the pump/coolant system/fmhe. i would rather do cheap easy stuff until i cant get it to go any faster. then ill start taking weight off. im hoping the e85 will help out a lot.

im still gunna run meth too, i decided back in june that if i was going to supercharge it, then it has to be intercooled also. pending the power output tomorrow ill decide on the GTP pulley setup with the 3.0

well i got some good news and some bad news....
good news is the car made 282whp, 281wtq, on 20*of timing
bad news is we fried the ZZP pcm....AGAIN!!! im bringing my intense one back to the shop tomorrow to reflash it, and ill wait on another PCM from ZZP as a spare

hmm. im gonna hope to be around that level sometime soon. nice numbers. drop some pullies and go for more. :D

the GTP pulley system is on hold, im going to the track this wednesday night to see what she runs. id love to get a 13.2 @103 we'll see
