Squeaky Belt, HELP!

I have a '97 SE with a 3800. The serpentine belt will NOT stop squeaking! It doesn't squak at idle, only when the RPMs rise.

The belt is not worn or cracked. I have used STP belt dressing, which makes it go away momentarily, but it returns after a few minutes.

Do I have a pulley out of allignment? Could it be a cheap or bad belt? Like I said, when I spray the belt dressing on it, the squealling goes away for a few minutes, but soon returns.

I am going to replace the belt, and see if that helps, but I can't replace it until this weekend, because I will be working 14 hour shifts all week, and I won't have the time. I was just curious to see if someone could enlighten me as to what might be going on.

I would say that your belt is not the problem. I would bet that you have a bad pulley, and it is a bearing squeaking.

FWIW, I would stay away from the belt dressing stuff. Often times, this can cause a belt to slip, and while the squeaking goes away, it will wear your belt out faster. The belt dressing stuff is not your friend.

I would suggest pulling off your belt, and spinning each pulley by hand. The idler and tensioner pulleys should spin freely, and continue to spin for only a couple seconds. If the pulley stops spinning right when you let go of it, if it makes a squeaking noise when you spin it, or if it seems like the pulley wants to spin forever, I would suggest replacing it with a new, metal one.

But unless the belt has a lot of cracks, or sections missing from it, there is no need to replace it.
