"Sport Edition" Wheels: Yes or No?

Hey,
I've been looking to upgrade my stock wheels soon, and have been considering some styles in the "Sport Edition" line that Tire Rack sells. I've been looking for reviews on them and came up with some that say they are a reasonable possibility, and others that say Sport Editions should be avoided at all costs. I'd like to get your feedback on the brand. Looks and styling aside, what is your opinion of Sport Editions? Are they durable enough to be a good return for my money, or should I look elsewhere for something better? I'm not in love with any particular style; just trying to find a way to start separating the good wheels from the bad ones, and then narrow that list down to the ones I like best. Thanks.
 


they're fine. all of the brands sold at tire rack are a subdivision of a larger company. for instance, asa is a subdivision of bbs.

Oops, forgot to ask Dadillac: Can I ask what size Sport Edition wheels you had? At this moment I'm leaning toward 18s, and was wondering how that size in that brand perform in the real world.
 


Tire Rack is currently showing 17 inch KV5s in stock at $136 each; $544 for a set of four. I'm kinda leaning toward the Sport Edition F7 style, but it doesn't come in 18s that I can see. Don't know if I can talk myself into the smaller size...
 
Have you factored in the price of the 18" tires? I haven't looked at tires for an 18" rim, but know the price on good 17" tires can be pretty high depending on brand/type.
 
i wouldn't go any smaller than 18s considering the stock wheels are 16/17s (depending upon your car).
 
I have had both 17 and 18" wheels. I have damaged tires but not the wheels. My favorite ones were the 18" ST4's that I had on a silver Cadillac Seville. Those were badass

Those ST4s have an interesting split-spoke design. Just not a fan of the extra screw heads around the edge. Still, they do have a good look to them. Nearly pulled the trigger to get some KV5s myself, but again, those extra screw heads kinda stick out to me.
I was wondering about tire prices too, 17s vs. 18s, now and in the future. I'm running stock 16' torque stars as my winter setup, and already had a nearly new set of tires to put on them, so that's done and paid for. If I go with 18s as my upgrade, will that size become common enough that replacement tires will get cheaper as time goes by? Hmmm... My uncle runs a tire/service business and has seen certain size wheels and tires nearly disappear over the years. He was reduced to going to junkyards to get certain tires for his customers, because none of his contacts had any new ones to sell. I don't want to decide 17s are OK, but get caught later by rising tire prices if 17s become less and less common. I guess I'll just have to go by my car-accessory-purchasing motto: "Buy what you like best now. That way you will be inclined to keep it, and keep it nice while you have it." My other motto is: "It's also OK to change your mind later if you make a mistake!"
 


Ran across something on CarDomain that really caught my eye: Blue Grand Prix On Sport Editions. Something odd about them though... it looks like the F7 style that I've been thinking hard about, but the description is calling them "TK5 18x8"s??? 1010 Tires says these are TK5s, and these are F7s. They look like F7s to me, and 17 inches is the largest size for that style. If I could read his tire sidewalls I could tell what size they really are. I might have to join CarDomain just to ask about those wheels!
 
Maybe Im gettin in on this a little late, if you wanna get the Kv5's in 18", just buy them for a 2008 Mustang. For some reason, they wont show for a GP.... or an earlier Mustang. Those are the wheels I got, and I love them. Personally, I kinda wish I spent the little extra to get them chrome plated. They send you the hub centric rings you need, too. You'll get lug nuts with them, but they wont fit. I was kinda shocked how fast they got here too, like two days after I ordered.





Second one isnt my car, but yeah, they look nice, and if you lower the car a little, it's a home run. Definitely get 18, you're wasting your time with 17's, you wont be able to tell the difference from stock, and 17" tires are usually more expensive than 18's. I got 245/45/18, I think I spent 600 on the tires, Kumho 4x's
