Spectre Air Filter Install (Low Budget)

First off, I’m a student on a low budget. There for I must work with what I’ve got. Here are a few pictures and details about my little project today.
My buddy had just bought a car and it had this cool looking CAI (Cold Air Intake) in it from out of state and it wouldn’t pass smog (in California) due to aftermarket parts (visual). So he had it replaced with a stock air filter box. He doesn’t know anything about cars whatsoever. So I offered to buy the cone filter off of him. He declined and gave it to me instead. The next day I strolled into Autozone with my cone Spectre filter in hand. I saw that Spectre made kits for this and so I bought a Pre made kit for around $40. I took it home and opened it up and started to put it all together but the tubing was too small. I believe the stock intake is about 3” circumference, and Spectre’s kit was like 2”. So I took the kit back and started brain storming. I noticed that the kit was just plastic tubing painted chrome. So I went to Ace Hardware and purchased 2’ of black PVC pipe which was also 3”. This cost me $4. I shoved the PVC into the factory rubber intake hose past the ridges but right before the sensor. I then had to cut off a foot and just eye ball it and made necessary cuts so that it fit. I secured the factory hose onto the PVC using medal hose clamps. From there on the other end of the PVC pipe I inserted my Spectre air filter by removing the little inserts that the Spectre air filter has for different sizes. So now the Spectre air filter fits perfectly over the PVC. Secured this with another medal hose clamp, and it’s not bad for a low budget intake.
2’ of 3” PVC = $4
Spectre cone air filter = FREE
Medal hose clamps = FREE (friends unwanted parts)

Looks good.. Basically a free setup. You should clean up the engine bay

Ya i just went to the store and picked up a bunch of car cleaner supplies and soap and all that good stuff..

That's how mine has looked for a while, I did the same thing, but had to pay for my Spectre filter.

Soon going to upgrade to 4" piping for better air flow when I drop pulley size.

why not just go 4" piping now. shouldn't it help with or without the smaller pulley. I live in California so idk how much I can mod my car due to all the smog B.S.

It looks good. I like seeing the filter farther from the engine, and closer to either the fender, or the headlight assembly(Where the stock box originally picked up from). It's the difference between a HAI and a CAI.

I'd also like to see what the first 6 pics were.

CLEANED UP THE ENGINE BAY A BIT..

This was what I've been thinking of doing all along. No need to buy a $300.00 filter kit, just a simple piece of tubing, and a filter. Only thing I might do different, is try to design a baffle between the engine compartment and the filter. Good thing summer is coming. Now I've got something to keep me busy.

Really nice I think I'm gonna do this but not for a few months I actually just put in a K&N air filter in so might as well get some usage out of it lol but it will be nice to have that free space! Maybe I will get a PCM tray or make something for it..

In case it isn't mentioned. If you're using pvc, get pvc cement. It'll never come off.. unless u want it to :P
