What are some of the basic mods that you should have before considering 1 heat range colder plugs?

I thought I read most people are just using the cheapo copper Autolites?
 


The rule of thumb is that you want to run the hottest plugs you can get away with.Normally you will want to drop a heat range (605 going by autolites) when you drop a pulley size. Most commonly, people will drop to a 104 Autolite plug when they get to the 3.5/3.4 pulley range and that will be plenty for even a slightly smaller pulley.
 
Okay, so I have stock manifolds with a 3" catted DP and magnaflow exhaust, pcm tune, and throttlebody spacer...I plan on putting a 3.4 pulley on, so going with the Autolite 104's is probably the best bet?
 


No? that's why I wrote out that I had stock manifolds because that was going to be my next question. Do you think the pLogs would be okay? Or do I have to go with headers?
 
Headers > plog if its SC but if headers aren't available or within your price range. Get a downpipe/plog combo.
 
get the headers.
save your money. speed daddys will go for 200 bucks eventually. i wouldnt risk dropping to a 3.4 without headers.
 


And lets not all forget before you drop to anything you need something to scan with unless you enjoy replacing your motor.

I didnt realize they were that cheap. I was looking at the SSAutoChrome ones for around the same price shipped but I saw someone on the other forum ordered theirs a while ago and never heard back. So speed daddy might be the way to go
 
someone on here just the other day ordered speed daddy and had the same issue with them jacking with him.

keep researching. don't let everyone talk you into cheap headers that don't fit or leak. read up and then decide. there are other people who run 3.4 and plog with downpipe and say they have no issues.

there have been others who have said you just need the downpipe and no plog and 3.4 will work with the other mods.

some people use ported headers. other people say they don't do anything.

you are going to get a lot of conflicting info.

i've read up for about a month or so. i need to get different plugs it sounds like. got 3.4, 180 tstat, zzp 1.0 pcm, downpipe, and belt but i have maintenance to do first before i can install any of it. we'll see what happens.

Yup SD is doing some shady stuff right now but im sure everything will be fixed if time is allowed. Those i'm assuming cheap headers your referring to are either SD or SSAC have been used by so many members. Yes they fit. Some have minor issues as far as fitment goes w/ there fans being close or for the 04+ guys will the o2 sensor hitting the firewall. Both extremely easy fixes. Fan to close....check the condition of your mounts or go w/ a slim fan or flip your mounts. o2 hitting either bash in the firewall a bit or use a rear o2 from a c5 and splice it in. Not everyone wants build the fastest GP in the world so those "cheap" headers can also be extremely budget friendly.

Oh and use different clamps and should have any leaks if not a bit of copper rtv wont hurt :)

all of above is exactly what i mean.

they work if.......

if you dont have the know how or time and patience either pay more for good ones or just get dp and/or plog. if you are staying 3.4 or above, with the other necessary mods, you won't need headers. thats basically what i've found here and other sites and vendor sites.

i wanted the headers because they look cool and lots of people say you "need" them. oh, and they are "cheap." cheap is the correct description. i read more and found for basic 3.4 setup not needed and in the end decided against it. you might want or need a cat on there too. now you have to pay another 50-70 for that and then pay someone to weld it on and a straight pipe and now you're looking at 300-350 plus new claps and a lot of hassle. you can get a dp and plog and do it yourself in the driveway (if you're exhaust isnt real rusty) in a few hours and be done with it.

the key is kr and from what i've read kr on a basic 3.4 isnt too difficult to manage. what i've deduced is headers are for smaller pulleys and other mods that need better flow. if you think you might want to go toward that then get the headers. however you go about making them work is up to you and what you think you can do. i like working on cars but hate hassles so i try to find a balance.

well I had an 02 SSEi. I had plogs, 3" dp highflow cat with flowmaster 50s, cai, and a tune. Eventually I ended up chipping a piston :(
