Spare keys?

I was needing to have a few spare keys made for my 01 GPGT but I've read somewhere that the Black fob ontop of your key is actually not just aesthetic, but actually has an electronic in it that sends a signal to the radio allowing the car to start. Is this true?

IIRC:

Then it has an RFID chip which communicates to the corresponding device in the steering column which allows the vehicle to keep the fuel pump running.

The vehicle will start without the proper chip, but the fuel pump won't run.

Basically what he is saying is that, Yes you can get spare keys made, but because the keys are chipped you will have to spend alot more money to get copies.

How?

Buy this:

BRAND NEW GM PK3 B97PT TRANSPONDER CHIP KEY | eBay

Bring to local key cutting place.

Have them cut it to match your existing key.

They should do it for free, but tell you they can't do anything for you if they **** it up.

Then follow the program sequence.

It MIGHT be in the owners manual, if not, its definitely on this forum somewhere.

Edit: I read the description, the seller provides you with instructions on how to program.

So I'd suggest you buy one or two if you're in need of spare.

Much cheaper than the dealer.

How what?

Chipped keys are always more money than non chipped keys. I got a set for a my truck for 12 bucks, thats for both keys, 1 to open doors and 1 ignition key.

Buying the chipped key is what costs the money.

I just had a GM certified locksmith make me a PK3 key and it cost me $50!!! I was shocked how much it was. Feel like he ripped me off....but can't just have one key to my car.

GM Key is #88951932 - Retail $29.82 +tax
Note: (REPLACEMENT KEY MUST BE PROGRAMMED TO VEHICLE;SEE THEFT DETERENT SUB-SECTION OF SVC MANUAL) (MASTER KEY)

Most dealerships like the one I work at rent the very expensive computer controlled key cutting machines, we charge $10.00 to cut any key to pay for it. So tax and all $50.00 is about right, but know there are cheaper made keys, the metal is softer, and tends to bend or break easier if your cylinder binds. This is why the GM keys are higher, but its up to you, where you get it and how its done, just make sure you always have a spare. You don't want to have to tow the vehicle to a dealer to get a new key programmed if/when you lose all your keys.

I just got a new key for my 02 GP. It cost me $23.98 out the door. The key, tax and they cut it. They had to order it so it took 2 days to get it but it was worth the wait. Plus I programed it myself right there in the parking lots. Works great!!!

i have a 99 GP GTP and it doesnt have the chipped key and i had a hardware store make my spare key for $2 i was under the impression that all our cars have chipped keys but i guess mine didnt? i dont know
